Default problem with raptor 660

a friend of mine has an '04 raptor 660 and has been having the reverse light flash on and off, it will do it idleing or running trough the gears. Once he gets the rpms up in 1st or 2nd gear the engine seems to be hitting the rev limiter and then starts acting like it wants to choke out with just the slightest bit of gas put to it, as long as he keeps the rpms down in 1st gear he can putt along (with the reverse light on) with no problem. I noticed similar topics, but none quite like this problem. Can anyone help? I felt I might need to add that this problem stops once 3rd is reached. Thanks, any help is appreciated!

well i had something simmilar happen to me but not the reverse light...but it sounds to me that its the reverse rev limiter and it is usualy caused by the damn parking brake i suggest first pulling the bottom wire out on the left side of the handlbars... then start her up and it ran fine for me... make shure once you get it working agian rip that parking brake out and get a block off kit!

I'm pretty sure the same switch that turns on the reverse light is the same one that tells the CDI box that the transmission is in reverse. If the switch on the motor is failing, it could cause the CDI to kick in its rev limiter for reverse, even in forward gears. I have not worked on a 660 before but, I have seen guides for bypassing the reverse rev limiter. Totaly bypassing the reverse switch could be a quick and dirty fix for the problem. Just be ready for it to go faster in reverse.

Here is a link to a guide I found.

I think that I read somewhere that it just does that if it stays above 3 rpms for a few seconds.
