Default New 2002 Grizzly owner with questions.

Ok last week we bought a used 02 Grizzly from the dealer. Test drove it once and everything seemed ok. Went back and tested it again with the wife and when we got there the bike was in back. The salesman told me they were charging the battery cause it had died and that most likely it was cause someone left the key on. Didn't think much of it and we purchased the bike and took it home.
We live in Fort Collins, Colorado with an elevation of about 5000 feet. We took it out a couple times around the neighborhood and everything seemed fine and dandy. This past Thursday we tried to start it up again and all we got was a clicking noise coming from under the seat. Pull started it and it went no problem.
Went up to Walden for the weekend which is I think around 8k feet and had several issues I'm looking for answers on.

We had the sputtering issue that many here have talked about. It would sputter for a few seconds before it takes off. Is this a jetting issue? It didn't seem to do it when we were in town.
Had the issue with the clicking noise under the seat every morning and had to either pull start it or jump it. Once it was running for a while it would start right up and seemed to run ok. Is this a bad battery?
And lastly when we hit the rear breaks hard to stop fast there is a noise that seems to be a grinding or slipping noise or some sort? Any direction on this issue would be great as well.

Other then that the Grizz did great in the sand dunes. It easily handled the Vinson 500 and kept right up and even was faster in the sand then the 700 KingQuad that was with us.

Welcome to the forums

1) Big changes in elevation will definately affect your jetting and cuase some issues

2) As far as the battery your best bet is to buy a new one and see if the problem continues. Alot of time if a older battery gets really drained it will never hold a good charge again.

3) If brakes are grinding you could just need new pads. If it is more of a sqeaking sound this is pretty common on Yamahas

Grats on the new Quad

My guess is a bad battery to start with. And yes, jetting would make sense if it runs fine at a different altitude. If you cahnge altitude frequently, a good product for you would be "Dial-A-Jet" from thunder products. The brake grinding is probably the rotor, and pads or one or the other at worst. At least, it may be dirt or debri. You would have to look at it, or bring it to the dealer. You should have a 30 day warranty.

Thanks for the reply guys, really appreciate it.

Where can I buy the "Dial A Jet" it looks like they don't sell them on their site. Is this something I need to purchase from the local dealer or is there a good site to purchase them from? On that note where would be a good site to check out pads and routers as well?

If the noise you hear when hitting the rear brake hard is a rattling or chattering sound, this is normal and all Grizzly's do this. Sure sounds like you have a weak or dead battery so you should replace it with a new one. I wonder if it's the original battery, some '02 models (like the one I have) hit the showroom floor in July of '01 so that battery may be 5 years old...

Yeah the brakes are more of a rattle or clunking type sound. They only do it when you really get on the brakes and only for a sec or two.

I have a K&N air filter that needs cleaning as well, what is the best way to clean it?

Get a K&N recharge kit (can get a most car places) it comes with a cleaner and the oil for it. Just soak it with the cleaner let it sit awhile and rinse from the inside out with cold water. Dont use high pressure to rinse or compressed air to dry it just let it dry on its own.

My terminals on my battery worked themselves loose a couple of times, and I had the same symptoms with my battery that you do. Simple fix- just tightened the terminals with a screwdriver. I'm sure you would have noticed this by now, but if not, just check & make sure your cables are secure to your battery. Sometimes the simple things are the ones we overlook.

Ive seen the dial a jet on ebay, and i think speedwerks has them also. Otherwise, call thunder products, and they will ship it to you via over the phone
