Default Blaster - Known engine swaps?

Hey guys,

Looking for any known engine swaps that people have done to a Blaster. I've found MacDizzy's swap to a DT200 (watercooled) engine, but I'm looking for something alittle more awe inspiring. I haven't seen anything else on the web.

The Blaster is a great size quad, very manueverable, light, lots of accessories, etc. which in my mind makes it perfect for a swap. I'd like to make it alittle meaner than the 200c stock mill. I'm not talking 240 stroker kit and bored out cylinder mean...I'm talking like YZ450F mean!

Ideally thats what I'd like to make fit. A modern 4 stroke engine like the YZ400F, YZ426F or YZ450F watercooled torque monster. I'm just throwing this post out to see if anyone knows of something someone else has done. Always good to do homework first.

For all you doubters out there, YES I have the tools to do the work. YES I have the mechanical and electrical aptitude to perform the task. YES I have time to kill (this is my wifes quad, and she doesn't ride it...I do for fun). YES I know a swap like this probably makes NO SENSE to 90% of the people that read this post, but thats part of the reason I want to do it. Just to be different and give you all something crazy to read

Tell me what you've seen out there. Flame suit on

I have seen a neighbor stretch out the frame and make one into a dragster with a harley motor but it sounds like you want to actually ride trails also and be more versatile...what about a 250r engine or a banshee engine that would be pretty sweet to just blow past people with a blaster im sure you know this but just build around the engine and it should work out good...good luck some of the bomb guys have put a hayabusa engine in their ds650's and they look factory which is sick.

If your looking for raw power, I think your best bet would be a 4 stroke out of newer dirt bikes but it wouldn't be cheap. One thing I wanted to try was an 70s era RD350 motor in a ATV. I have no idea if this would even be worth while or not. RD350 parts bikes show up on ebay all the time. The motor is an air cooled 2 stroke twin rated around 35-40hp with stock porting and pipes. Just incase you don't know much about old Yamaha bikes, the RD350 is the air cooled motor that came before the liquid cooled RZ350. Because of new U.S. EPA laws in 1985, Yamaha had to stoped selling the RZ350 in the US. With a few changes, Yamaha dropped the RZ350 motor into a quad and called it the Banshee. So you could almost say your Blaster would be an air cooled version of the Banshee.

I seen someone put a 250 four stroke dirt bike motor in a blaster, but they had to modify the frame to fit that motor. A bigger thumper probably be alot of work. Of course with the power you want, you would probably be strecthing the frame to make it more stable. On Macdizzy's site there is a blaster with a 250 twostroke engine. if you found a modern 250 two stroke engine, it could be modified to make as much as a old aircooled 350 twin two stroke. Espcially one with a power valve.

yz490 or yz250.you also do know you can make over 50 horsepower with motorwork right?a good 240 big bore kit along with a stroker and port and polish would have you beating 450s and piped banshees.theres even a blaster ive seen i think its from cpcustoms that is only a stroker and it beats drag banshees and drag 450s etc.theres alot you can do.lighten flywheel and counterbalancer, timing, bigger carb etc.im actually planning on building a blaster up to beat 450s.

Yes, I know that a blaster engine has many viable mods available to make it go fast. Problem is that the more you mod your blaster for HP, the less bottom end your gonna have. In order to use than new found power you have to be up in the 6000 - 10000 rpm range. Besides, there are plenty of people that have built-up the yfs200, I'd like to make mine alittle different.

I want to put together a 4 stroke blaster, with lots of low down torque for the type of riding I do. Being real fast will be a side benefit for me on this project. I'd love to go toe-to-toe with a TRX450 and smoke 'em. I'd even consider putting in an auto-clutch like a rekluse, since this is my wifes quad

I appreciate the commentary. As I suspected, not much else out there that people have done to "change" the blaster into a sleeper of sorts. I'll probably get started on this little project in October, so I'll see what I can do for pictures. I'm half way leaning toward using a Honda engine on this...I have a CRF250X and If I were to go with a CRF450X engine (X for the electric start in the blaster it would make this real easy for me...I already know that engine like the back of my hand.

We'll see what I can get a deal on.

Look into the honda 400ex motor. I used it on my warrior motor swap because of it reliability and I did not have to worry about finding a spot for a radiator. Its actually a very small motor for the size it is, smaller than a warrior motor for sure. Have fun with your sensless project, I did with mine LOL.

if your set on a 4stroke i understand but just to let you know a stroker will give you more power down low along with a reed spacer, air filter, bigger carb and port and polish.i know people with setups like that just +3 or +4mm strokers that absolutely destroy 400exs.another option is 2 stroke powervalve motor like you can get for a 250r.my 88tecate4 had a powervalve motor and some goodies that made it break 100mph and had more down low than my buddys 400ex.just some ideas for ya.believe i love building and tinkerin too.i built my tecate from the frame up now my next project is either gonna be a blaster or 250r.

not to rain on ur parade...but a blaster is a light framed little quad...if youre going to put a huge motor in something really small...which is really cool to do, then get a stronger frame because the blaster wont hold up too well. I used to have one and if i went to hard on the thing...it would bend and twist, and i bent my a arms just riding. Youd prolly have to gusset the frame and do suspension and all these other things and by the time you were done, you could have put a viper engine into a banshee for the same price...well, almost..
