Default raptor 660 gearing

Hi all,

I have a 660 raptor and do most all my riding on my own land. Most of the land is wooded hills, so it makes for a lot of slower trail riding. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way (or ways) that I can change the drive ratio or gearing on my 4 wheeler to make it a little more slowpoke friendly. The factory setup has real tall gears and requires more clutch work than I'd like to stay at the slower pace of my wife's kawasaki 300 4x4.

*Edit Sunday Sept 3.*
Thanks for all the help so far guys. Much appreciated. Does anyone know the gearing ratios for my transmission and what the redline rpm are for a 660R? Thanks again!

*Edit Monday Sept. 5*
Ok all. I checked my owners manual (which I should have done in the first place) and found my tranny setup. Primary reduction ratio is 2.088. First gear ratio is 2.583. Secondary (chain) reduction ratio is 3.076. Someone mentioned that the rev limit was probably around 8500. When I play around with all these numbers at 100% throttle (8500 RPM) and stock 20" tires I come up with a speed of 30.5 mph. That seems just a tad too fast to me for first gear. I've probably screwed up bad here somewhere. Consequently, that also gives a theoretical top speed of 87 mph using fifth gears' .904 ratio.

Get bigger tires and drop a tooth in the front.

Dropping 1 tooth in the front is the best MOD I ever made for trail riding. It's cheap, too.

Need more?

Larger tire on the rear is good. I run 22" tires now (not the stock 20"). Makes a HUGE difference, as I don't get hung up on rock or roots as much. But you'll have to replace all 4 wheels (22" on rear and 23" on front).

If you don't want larger tires and dropping 1 tooth on the front doesn't lower the gears enough, go up 3 teeth on the rear sprocket. Don't drop another tooth on the front (too much chain stress - wear out chain/sprocket faster).

12 tooth sprocket in the front and 22" rear tires is a great combo in tight trails.

I went down one up front and up two in the rear and loved it! Works great with stock size tires or larger tires.

Transmission ratio depends on the year, 2001 was different than everything since.

The factory says the rev limiter kicks in at 9200 rpm but it's more like 8500 in the real world.
