Default hot rectifier/regulator

hi, 2 ques: 1-i am looking for some help. i have a 2004 yamaha rhino 660. there is a rectifier/regulator right above the battery. i purchased the unit used and the gentleman had an aftermarket one on it and where the plug plugs in it melted. i have repaired the wires and replaced it with the original rectifier/regulator but should they be hot to the touch when running? i am afraid it will melt again. the only adds on the unit are a 3k winch and dig dash, and i have looked for a bad ground or something but can't find one. i was curious if this was normal to be hot. thanks. 2-the unit also has an edlebrock carb on it and i am thinking of putting the orig back on as the edlebrock seems so hard to start, any suggestions? thanks again.

It has an edelbrock carb, does it have an exhaust on it, or at least an end cap. If it doesn't have either it could be starting hard because it is running very rich.

Its normal for the regulator/rectifier to be hot. Stators cant cycle on and off, and always put out max effort. If you dont use electrical stuff, like lights, then the voltage regulator has to shunt all of it to ground thru the big heat sink..the big aluminum finned area. If you run the lights, itll cool off.
