Why no 500
 

Why doesn't Yamaha have a 500cc 4x4 quad ,this seems to be a popular class, there is a big gap between the 450 and the 660, the 400 is a 401cc and the 450 is only 421cc, the 450 is closer to a 400cc than it is to a 450cc, being they are so cloes in size IMO it seems like they could drop the 450 completely and keep the 401cc in the 400, or put the 421cc engine 400, and make a 500, I had a 03 660 Grizz., it was a great quad but do to the boiling gas problem I got ride of it and got 500ho Sportsman, it does just as good or better than the Grizz. did other than the speed, my 500ho is starting to have front diff problems and it only has 500mi. on it, this is getting to be a big problem with the Sportsmans and I don't think I would ever buy another one, I like the 500 class it seems to be the better all around class, I want to switch back to Yamaha, the 700 is nice but I dont need one that big and I dont want to spend that much money for one, some 660s are still having the gas boiling problems so I dont care to get another one, 450 with that small cc engine is to small, I think if Yamaha made a 500 it would be the best selling 500 ever, what does everyone think.

i think yamaha thinks the 450 is fine and it has irs in back and don't need the extra 50 cc's i really don't think they need it either. i mean most irs 450 go for around 6k-6500k and the 660 is a fraction more.

I do think that Yamaha should have a 500 class, prefereably similar to the make-believe thread about the 500 Timberwolf just recently started. But seriously, I agree that a 500 would be a good overall size. The Vinson is a decent example of a somewhat sport-utility, with good power and doesn't weigh a ton.

Of course, being a wolverine fan, I would love to see a 500cc motor in a frame similar to the 95-05 Wolvy's. Either way, I'm sure there are alot of diehard Yamaha fans who ideally would like a midsize machine, 500-600cc, but end up sticking with something smaller (i.e. Me w/ 04 Wolverine) or give up and buy from another manufacturer.

Sooner or later hopefully....

Just think of the 660 as a bored out,hopped up, 500 Grizzly. The 660,s dry weight is only 600 Lbs! That is 125 Lb lighter than your 500 H.O you replaced it with . So you bought a heavier ATV with less power.

Heck the 660 Grizzly only weighs a few more pounds than most 400 Utility ATVs.

When I ride my friends 660 it feels like I'm on a nimbler lighter ATV until I gas it and know it is in a different power class.

The 660 with its 240cc advantage and larger frame only weights 9lbs more than the smaller less powerful 450 Grizzly. If Yamaha did make a 500 Utility it would just weigh more and have less power so whats the point.


The same can be said about the 700 Grizzly it only weights 2 lbs more than the 660.

They don't need one! What they need is a crossover atv with a manual shift.

TLC hit the nail on the head...

The Grizzly 660 has been the #1/#2 selling big bore quad for several years. Why create conflict in sales by introducing a 500cc quad, when they can spend the time improving on it... (grizzly 700)

I didn't say any about the weight and power difference being a problem, I plowed snow with both using the same plow and with Sportsman being heavier it did a better job than the Grizz., I have been on two trips to Canada using both quads and the 500 did just as good as the 660, both times going the same trail, the problem is the poor diff. on the Sportsmans and not wanting another 660 Griz. with a gas boiling problem, don't get me wrong but I liked my Grizz., but when your out on a long slow moving ride with lots of mud, rocks and downed trees like the one I go on in Canada and you stop and can hear the gas boiling and take the cap off and see it boiling thats not good, Iam just saying for what I do a 500 is all I need and would like to see Yamaha come out with a 500cc.

you can always do the 505cc kit from four stroke tech to get the 500cc class bike. Thats what i plan on doing when i get my bike paid off.

Thats exactly why I bought a Vinson.
A 500cc MANUAL SHIFT Sport-Utility really appealed to me.
Yamaha dosent make anything that fits that category.
Thats why I went Suzuki.
Anybody that likes a 95-05 Wolverine, will love a Vinson.

The engines in the 400 and the 450 are so close in size 401cc & 421cc, way have two different class size machines with almost the same size engines, IMO they could drop the so called 450 and build a 500cc auto 4x4, it would sell better than the 450 and probably end up being the best selling 500 in its class, plus not everybody wants a big 660, thow it is a great quad, the 500 class is the best for all around work and play, and I think a 500 GRIZZ would be an awsome quad.
