Ohhhh so this is where the starter clutch is at...I did not look at the install instructions cause I did not know this... So everyone thinks that is my problem? So I take it, if I pull that cover then I should be able to tell its bad in some way?

if you can spin the gear both ways freely its bad


and there will be little shavings of metal around the magnet on the flywheel

Hey boooosh or anyone. I'm trying to get the cover off and I've taken the 9 bolts off and have broken the seal by rocking it back an forth but it seems to be stuck to the starter or something. Do I just need to put a little more force to pull it free?

Ok called them and they said there is a rubber o ring there on the starter portion that you have to put a bit more pressure to seperate the housing from. Will try it out tonight...

i used a claw hammer to pop it off manon the left side of the starter there is a spot to get the claw part on

Man getting that magneto off is a major pita! And when it finally came it pop'd off alright - I dang near fell on the floor. I found a real tiny spring about 1/2 in long kinda mangled. Did you replace the 52 tooth gear? Mine has what appears on the middle inside where the big holes are some mangling....

Replace the clutch AND the gear, otherwise you WILL be replacing the clutch again soon. The L&A company has gone through some re-organization. I suggest you get your's from http://www.raptorstarterclutch.com/ . THey are the original L&A guys, and only ones to give you a lifetime warranty and have the newest design of the L&A clutch. They will price match with the eBay ones that are lower (at least they did for me) if you call them - 203-440-1649 - and free shipping. I got the clutch and gear from them for $245.

Also, take an extension magnet and fish down the oil passage beneath the flywheel to find any extra pieces of that spring and any steel particles that came from other clutch parts. That spring was originally 1 piece and the same diameter as the flywheel... so there are lots of little pieces now. The filter will keep them from getting into small passages, but they can still get into the tranny and bottom end, so be thorough about finding them, but dont worry too much about what might be left behind.
