Default Kodiak 400 rear end click

I recently purchaced a 400 kdiak 4x4 at a great price. After some minor carb work it runs great. My only concern is when i put it in gear somtimes it makes a click in the readend. The machine is all time fourwheel drive so i asumed its just the stress or pressure on the u joint and i was told it was normal in this paticular atv. Can anyone tell me if their machine does this and is it normal or should i replace the joint.. thanks

The older full time 4x4 units do not have a very straight angle on the front drive shaft and kills the U-joints. Take the dust cover off and you will most likly find the U-joint is worn out. The local Autozone should have the joint for $9. Its a 1982 Toyota Spectrum I think.

I have a 1998 Kodiak all time 4-wheel drive with 800 miles on it and it doesn`t make any sounds from the rear end

The rear U-joint of the front shaft is just under the rear shaft. The rear shaft does not have a U-joint but a CV joint of some kind at the transfer case. Never seen or heard of the rear craping out other than the ring and pinion. It only takes a couple of hours to change the front U-joints so inspecting them only takes a couple of minutes, 10 and 12 MM sockets and a flash light. Does the whole bike rise up 3 or 4 inches before it moves? My 97 only has 6500 miles and bearly broke in. I have a friend that won a 96 in a raffle and put 32,000 miles on it before the speedo cable broke. He never had any problems with the transfer case portion of the rear driveshaft, but put in a couple ring and pinions, and front U-joints every 2-3000 miles. But it was replaced two years ago with a Rancher AT. As for beermanjoe, go put some miles on that thing for Gods sake. My last 2 day trip was 165 miles.

It seems like I heard the ring and pinion was in the $300 range for the parts. But play the odds. Check the front U-joints.
