Default Wolverine Air filter

Just finished cleaning the air filter on my Wolverine but when I was taking it apart the manual says to pull off the end cap, but the end on my air filter cage that butts up against the carb intake side of the box, is sealed together with red gasket like adhesive. Call me crazy but the other end looks like one solid piece and I had to break apart the red gasket in order to slide off the foam filter to clean it. What a pain to get it back on. Is this normal, it didn't mention anything about that in the manual? Am I missing something? This is baffling me. Was I not suppose to pull it apart just to get the foam filter off without taking off the end piece cap?

the cap on mine is also non removeable you just have to pull the foam around it. I went ahead and bought a K&N filter for mine tho.
