my 400ex , out of the box was better at mx than my raptor was but i sold my 400 after i got my raptor and put tcs shocks, plus two a-arms, extended axle, pipe, bumper, grab bar,and more cool stuff, i am waiting on billet beadlocks all the way around, and nerf bars, what ever i do to it, it probably will not handle like my 310r but i like it.

If you are on a budget just buy a brand new stock quad (or come buy mine 5500 takes it) because they are set up great stock. If you got some money to blow go buy a raptor and put on extended axel and 2+2 a-arms and gear it down and you will have a great quad too. Raptors are a little bit skinnier (width) than the 400ex is. Mine has a +12 rear end and it handles so perfect around the corners.

I think you would be better off finding a used 250r and then put the arm and axle shocks and swing arm and you would be ready for mx for alot less. For the money for a new quad you could get a lonestar frame and arm and swing and find a crate motor and basically have a brand new R. Know thats not what you asked but the R is the best mx bike.
