2004 yamaha raptor 660
#1
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I have on a Yamaha Raptor.
I just bought a 2004 Raptor 660. When I loaded it the thing ran great. By the time I made it home (90 Miles) I now can't get it above an idle without it breaking down and backfiring. I drained the gas tank and put in fresh gas. I also cleaned the air filter and cleaned the main jets of the carbs. It acts like it is starving for gas as you rev it up.. I'm at a loss here folks. Anyone have this problem? If so, what do I need to do? It starts right up and will set and idle all day.

parking brake
you can pretty much search the words and you'll be about 40000000000 results on it, IMO remove the system and put a parking brake block off plate on the rear brake.

Excellent prognosis there speedy. You have progressed into a very help-full member with good input in the last year or two. Keep up the good work and we all appreciate your opinion. If you are ever around the H/M trails we gotta get together. See 'ya bro.

Two possibilities: Parking brake or Reverse Switch;
The Rappy's CDI has an RPM limiter that turns on when it senses that either the parking brake is on or the bike's in reverse. If either of those circuits is malfunctioning, the limiter is turned on, which makes the bike sputter and cough at anything much above idle. (they don't want you to kill yourself in reverse or try to ride with the parking brake on)
Check down by the sprocket where the Green/white wire attaches to the reverse switch. Make sure the connection is tight and clean (normally if there's a problem here, the reverse light will come on too, but many of them are burned out or missing) You can also disconnect the wire from the switch and ground the wire to a clean, paint free frame or engine bolt to permanantly disable the reverse limiter (and the reverse light).
For the parking brake, disconnect the Green/yellow and black wires where they connect to the parking brake switch wires to disable the this switch and the RPM limiter function from the PB.
One or both of these should eliminate your problem.
Good luck!

I too just returned from a great day of riding my Raptor and others... I know what it's like to not be able to ride due to some tiny but hard to find malfunction! Forums like this have assisted me through many of them.
Just glad it was simple, easy to fix and that we could help.
Happy Riding!
