I just got my new Grizzly (see signature) serviced and discovered they replaced the motor oil with 20w40. I was surprised they didn't replace it with the 10w30 that was already in the machine (I didn't specify what I wanted when dropped off).

Their reasoning is...it provides better lubrication therefore use it in all machines serviced in the dealership. I mentioned I winter ride my machines and 10w30 would give me a better range especially on the colder end and I was concerned about the thicker oil and cold starts. Their response was "don't worry about it; it won't be a problem".

I don't buy it. I've read of cold start problems related to oil that is thicker than it should be.

I'm planning on dumping the 20w40 and replacing it with Yamalube 10w30...

Does anyone have any opinion on this topic?

I know what u mean. I bought a 660 and it came new from the dealership with castrol 10w-40 u'd think they would use yamalube...anyway have stayed with the 10w40 and having no problems after 2600 miles... The 20w40 shouldnt be a problem(have a buddy that runs it year round and no problems) but like u in the winter i would dump it and go to whatever the manual reccomends...

Yes

1) What does your manual say to use?
2) Always change your own oil. It's easy to do and then you don't lose any sleep over it because you chose your own oil.

1) The manual states 10w30 for temp ranges 10 - 100+ deg F. This is the perfect range for me and I would think, for most people. Anything else, IMO, is a specialty oil for a specific driving temp. This should be the default for dealers unless the customer requests otherwise.

I understand I'm commenting on my specific Yamaha model and other makes and models have other requirements.

FYI...the manual states the following for the other 2 recommended oils:
- 20w40 for temp ranges 40 - 120+ deg F;
- 5w30 for temp ranges -5 - 30+ deg F.

2) Well said. I will change my own oil and filter going forward. If you saw the amount of old oil dripping from my skid plates on my garage floor, that alone convinced me. I figured the dealer should do the 1st service though.

I have been using AMSOIL 0w-40w oil in my atv's for 2 years now. I DO NOT have to switch between winter and summer oil. It is a fully syn. oil and IMO is the best all-around oil for any weather. Very smooth starts in the winter and a 40w in the summer. Happy riding guys. be safe!!!

I run the yamalube synthetic in my wolvy but in my older moto 4's I run regular yamalube which I believe used to be 20w40 or 20w50. The old yamalube has changed to 10w30 or 10w40 now.

Bingo..Right on,AMSOIL syn 0w-40 is the best thing out there in all temps..It may cost a little more ,but worth it in the end..
