Here is the plain and simple cold hard truth. There is a sort of gentlemen's agreement amongst ATV manufacturers to make them so they will not exceed around 75mph without any modifications. Inform him of that, and do the GPS trick if necessary, and allow him to eat his crow.

I have a buddy like that. He swears his new '08 Honda 450 will do 95mph. I told him my 660 will do about 73mph and when we race we are right there together. I haven't figured out why people stretch the truth about how fast their ATV will go. Maybe it's to boost their ego or maybe they are insecure about their manhood. Who knows?
I know sometimes on the trail it feels like you are going 90, but the fastest stock quad I have ever seen will do about 75mph. The fastest modified quad I have ever seen in person was a full-on drag Banshee that was running 115mph in the 1/8. He had full motor mds running an air shifter and alcohol.

I always find it amazing when I'm running my Z400 hard , ditch cruising thinking that I'm not going very fast and go for 5th gear and find out i'm already there ,then realize your passing cars on the highway , I'm still guessing around 65mph plus or minus 2mph

I have a friend that just bought a 07 raptor 700 off the showroom floor with no mods and he swears he is running 88 to 90 mph. Now i know a little bit about most atvs because im a reader of mags and a few forums. I research something before i give my opinion. Now from what i have read , he has lost his damn mind and i informed him that top speed is somewhere between 75 and 80 at the most in stock form. but he is one of those guys that knows everything even when he doesnt know anything at all. Can't tell him nothing. So.. those of you that own one reply with real numbers so i can show him what other owners are saying. and would also like to know what mods are needed to get to the numbers he is claiming.</end quote></div>
You can tell him flat out that all new muscle ATVs have a 75mph (give or take) cap on them from the factory due to the liability.

Someone with no speedo shouldn't claim a top speed because its all feel and feel isn't that accurate.
Ask them what the top speed on a GPS. My grizz 660 does 95km/hr with no mods except for tires.
