Default 2001 Raptor "CLANK" when shutting off

Every once in a while my bike will make a clank sound when I shut it off. It sounds like its coming from the starter or crank area. It doesn't always do it, sometimes its smooth and sometimes I hear the metal to metal sound. The bike runs like a champ no issues other than that. any idea? is this normal? thanks

Sounds like the one way bearing sprag is starting to go, I thought I heard of that being a problem with the first few years of Raptor. I know there is a heavy duty replacement available out there, I can't remember the entire name of the company, something like L.A. Sleeve, or something like that. Eithe stock or aftermarket replacement, you are looking at 150 - 200 bucks, if I remember correctly, anyone out there feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

i'd agree with 95wolv there is a one way bearing like he said behind the stator that will only spin one way and after a few years they will develope play and depending on where it stops and catches is where you're probably getting your noise or it could just be the starter gear. who knows until you tear into it. and just saying you hear a noise sometimes isn't the best description

I wouldn't worry about it, they all do it. It doesn't necessarily have to be worn out or bad for it to clunk. My raptor 700 did it when it was brand spanking new, and my warrior still did it even after I replaced the one way bearing and starter gear. The clunk is not an indication of damage or excessive wear, it's simply that sometimes, depending on what position the engine is at when you shut it off, it sometimes will stop and try to turn in the reverse direction due to pressure in the cylinder. When the engine does this the bearing will engage abruptly and cause the noise you hear.

Now, when you start hearing this same clunk-clunk-clunk sound when you're starting your engine, or when it gets noticably worse, THAT is an indication that the one way is on it's last leg. At that point you'll probably start noticing excessive metal shavings in your oil filter from the bearing shaving itself apart.
