I was replacing the swingarm boot on my 03 kodiak last night. When I was putting the drive shaft back into the yoke I depressed the rear brake to get it in N so I could rotate the yoke a bit. I had the rear brake assembly off the axle at the same time to diagnose an axle issue and of course when I depressed the rear brake pedal the caliper forced the pads together and I don't know how to open them up again to get it on over the brake disc. Do I release the bleeder or is there some way to reset the adjustment like on a drum brake?

 

use a c clamp to depress the pistons so you will have enough room to put your pads on and slip it onto the caliper... there like little vise clamps shapped like a C just make sure you put a cloth in between the piston and the clamp surface so u dont scratch it

 

Yeah, I have a small c-clamp, wasn't sure if it would just go back with force though. I'll give that a try, tks.

 

it might go back in easier if you open the master cylinder for the caliper your working on. just be sure to top off the fluid after you seat the pads and ride it one time.

 

I was not able to get the clamp on it (did not remove pads) but was able to push it back enough to get it back on over the disc using the rubber handle of my big standard screw driver.

But if and when you use a c-clamp --- make sure you do it slowly.. otherwise brake fluid will shoot out of the master cylinder making a mess!
