Break-In Questions
#1
Hello everyone! I will be picking up my first ATV tomorrow afternoon, a '08 Raptor 700R. I know everyone has different opinions on how to properly break in an engine.
For those who stick to the take it easy method, how long do ride for each heat cycle? At our ranch, there is a 10 mile long dirt road I can ride on to vary the engine speed. Should I ride there and back once or twice and then let it cool off for awhile before going again?
I have broken in two motorcycles over the last two years, plus countless shifter kart engines and formula cars over the years. I personally thing that taking it easy is better, but I don't want this to turn into a debate over that.
Thanks!

ive always used about only half throttle for the first month or so and i dont ride for more than 1hr straight, and after every continous hour of riding i let it cool down for about 5-10mins then ride again. and when about a few weeks or month goes by i do a tuneup. then after that tuneup i usually start riding it at full throttle and ride it for longer periods of time. everyone has there own little breakin procedure that they like to do but thats just mine. yamaha says not to give a bike full throttle until 1000 miles...lol, but i dont think anyone follows that.

Modern molly rings come in really fast. At least they do in our race cars.
A couple of hot laps and they are locked in within 15 minutes. I have found no better compression after about 15 minutes or so.

Well jeremy I'll tell you how I broke in my warrior with a fresh top end.
I putted around on it for about a 10 minutes to let the motor warm up, found me a good long straight and gave it full throttle until the motor rapped out in about 3rd gear, kept the gear in, let the motor slow me down, and did it about about 10 times.
after all of that I took the bike, changed the oil and filter, and the motor was offically broken in.
I know what you're thinking right about now, that I'm crazy as hell, but like doc said, modern rings break in very quickly, what he forgot to mention that the hone on the cylinder walls break in even quicker, and unless you break the rings in right, you'll never get a good ring seal, and your motor will be significantly weaker because of it.
there is a website that explains the science behind this better than I can (and so help me I cant think of the page, so sorry) and I've personally tested this method. It works.
Then again u could keep it safe like 91 is telling you. I would'nt recommend it, but it is your bike.

i would break it in one very simple way. ride it how you are going to ride it every day. i am pretty sure they are run for a little while at yamaha when the unit is assembled. id give it 30 minutes of idling and easy riding. you know, to check for leaks and all that crap. change the oil if you want too, then go out and ride it like you stole it.
