Lookin for first quad, advice?
#1
Hey guys, I just found this forum on a whim hoping y'all could give me some advice on my first quad. A good bunch of my buddies all ride (quads/bikes) and im looking to get a quad for myself. Im pretty much only gonna be doing trail/woods riding yet im still lookin to have a little giddyup. I've talked around to my buddies and other people I know who've been riding for years and Im thinkin about pickin up a Raptor 660. You guys got any advice for me?

if you guy raptor, go 700r. the 660s had some tranny issues. a 400ex will do good, for the price, as will the other 400s DVX,Z,KFX 400s. warriors are decent, if your gonna buy brand new for trails i recommend Outlaw 525 IRS.

If your going to be doing all that, you want something that you know will be able to handle everything, yet still have the giddy up you want. I would say go with the Wolverine 4x4 450. This thing will give you the speed you need, plus the 4x4 to handle some moderate - heavy wood / trail riding. Also, just keep in mind that if you do think about getting the raptor just think about the low ground clearance. This will effect wood / trial riding considerably as some of the stuff you need to get over you wont be able to, or you will bottom out.
The Wolverine is probably the most overall atv you will see in it's class. That's why I bought it, because I wanted to be able to do different things on different days depending on the mood I was in. Just think long and hard about this, because you don't want to get your quad and then regret it down the road.
Hope this helps ...

I would agree with 4strokemurder to a point. Depending on how much you want to spend go for the 700 new or used you wont find a better allaround quad made. With EFI there will be no rejetting for differant altitudes if you want to MX a little bit it can do that to. It might not stand out in any certain area but it can do them all and do it well. IMO the only quad that even comes close to doing what the 700 can do would be the new 09 Z400, but as I said before it depends on how much you want to put into a quad. The 660 is good but takes some suspension work to even be where a stock 700 is from the factory! By the way welcome to the forum!

IMO the 400ex is just about the perfect first sport ATV......great handling and ergonomics, lots of torque heavy power, fun in the trails and in the open......will keep up with most sport ATVs and bikes in the woods, has an endless amount of aftermarket goodies, long history of reliability......... and if you are on a budget you can find used ones from many years back that are still in great running order...... and since you mention the Raptor-660 I'm guessing you might be looking used in which case the 400ex is the way to go IMO.

Yep 660 is a good quad, but the Raptor 700 is much better if you can swing it. There are 700's in my area on craigslist.com going for $3000-$4000. That's not bad considering the 660's are going for $2500-3500. The 700 would be much better than a 660 for a beginner because the 660 likes to wheelie and feels slightly unstable in turns compared to the 700, but if you get a 660 you'll get used to it.
On the other hand, a 400EX is an excellent beginner bike, but if you're looking for power then the big bore Raptors would be better

I agree too.
If you are mostly do trail and woods riding, you need ground clearance and 4X4, especially if there is a lot of mud and/or hills. The Wolverine is a good mix of the 2. If you are looking for an older model that is also good all around but more utility (with still a lot of top end speed) look at a Grizzly 660.
