How cold is too cold to run a Quad?
#1
Ok... Not sure if anyone can offer advice/suggestions or not but this is my problem ( not my only one according to my wife but I will save those for another fourm )
I have a 1998 Timberwolf 250 I have been running every winter for about 7 years and this is the first year I have run into a problem. The old dog starts great no problem there but this year the temp has dropped to -30 ish Celcius. Still starts fine however during the middle of the plowing snow it puked out all of it's oil from a breather hose located under the gas tank.(I should mention the day before it was run out in really warm winter weather - just above freezing then parked in the shop for about three days at -30 to -40c ) I cleaned it all up - pushed it into the heated part of the shop for two days to thaw, filled it up with oil (5w30 synthetic). It started great again all seemed fine no leaking oil. I went to finish the plowing and it worked great no problems ( temp was around -37 celcius ..... not sure why we live here anymore). I ran it for about 45 minutes at that temp seemed fine. I parked it in the un-heated part of the shop. The next day ( today ) temp was only -15ish so I put on some sun block and my bathing suit and went to plow AGAIN and out came the oil AGAIN!.
Why is this happening and how can I stop it? Is the sudden swing in temps causing the problem? Am I crazy to be running quads at these temps? ( I already know what my wife thinks just looking for others input)

your not crazy lol, i run my foreman in temps like that without a problem. if your oil came out the breather tube that isnt good, as youv been told you may just have a blockage in the circulation of oil. while its still empty run some seafoam or even kerosean(1-2 cups max) threw the top of your engine and let it drain out the drain plug. if you can have it drain/dry for a few hours it would atleast not hurt you.
after that refill the oil, and make sure your filter is not in backwards!!! seen it with honda filters before. anywho, refill the oil and add half a cup of sea foam, it will act as a good deturgent and break down any deposits that may be blocking your engine oil from circulateing.
if you dont know what sea foam is, your not alone. it comes in metal can at the hardware store or walmart, runs about $7 but its worth it! i usually run 1/4 of a container in my tank of gas, but it has many other uses if you read the bottel!
hope this helps your problem, but it wont hurt if it doesnt work

Thanks for the info cherokee (also thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who drives a quad when it's so cold the snowmobile won't run )
I will give your suggestion a try .... I think it may also be time to change the oil filter. I still think it needs a good warming up.

o yes, oil filter change is a MUST. i change the filter every time i change the oil in all my mechines. just cheep insurance! and its always a good idea to keep your atv as warm as possible in the winter. unfortunately i do not have a heated garage so im at the mercy of the temp! so full choke for me lol
but since it puked up oil after it had been running leads me to believe its gunk in the engine rather than just a temp problem... oil comeing out means high pressure

My god where do you live ! At that temp I would say "Strange things happen" .
Stay indoors and forget about the drive way.
-25 is the coldest we had so far Norther Ontario Canada.

LOL Snow waits for no man ! (plus it is kind of fun shhhhhhhh don't tell my wife or she will add to my honey do list). Yeah I think I have learnt my lesson on the super cold temp thing but I still need to fix the problem OR find a cheap flight to a warm place! Hope I can get it running again before the next snowfall

Well more snow has fallen and even after giving the quad some quality heat time and changing the air filter , oil filter and the other suggestions on this post it's still puking up oil from the breather hose located under the gas tank. Any other suggestions about what might be causing this ??

Hummmm I just don't understand how or why this is happening It seems the breather hose that the oil is poring out of from under the gas tank is connected to the rear end (final Drive Gear case) I'm at a lose as to why this is happening ??

My old Honda TRX250 has done this. Now in my case it was the breather tube for the engine. Now this quad was used daily on a farm and from so many "cold starts" along with leaving the choke on so long the oil would biuld up with gas. As the quad never got hot it was always started drove 5 minutes and shut off a few times a day. Over the course of a couple months it filled the crank case up.
At first I thought I had a carb problem (leaky need and seat)but no it was what I discribed above.
When the quad is started up and "worked" as in the engine getting hot I never had an issue no matter how cold it was.
So make sure you know what vent hose it is for sure.

Hi Sawyer , Thanks for the feed back yeah this quad is used along the same line short runs ( I do try and keep it running ). I did confirm the hose that the oil is leaking from is from the back end (final gear drive case). I have also notied now there may be oil leaking out of the final drive gear case it self..... all this cuz i HAD TO PLOW at stupid low temps. I know I can fix the leaks I 'm just baffled as to what is still causing this
