I bought one new in 99. It rides like a truck, and handles like a tank. I wish I would've waited till the 2000 Kodiak came out like my buddy did. Now there is a true 4x4 quad. Ride, power, and great looks. I once pulled a picnic table across the lawn (upside down of course). My buddy pulls 20' boats with his Kodiak. If only I would have waited.

Out perform is a rather broad term. It will not out perform in the power department. But since it is lighter and more agile it will out perform in the handling department. In the mud they are probably about the same, with a small nod going to the Grizzly becuase of supperior power and ground clearence. At hill climbing I'm not sure.

My brother and I bought 2 new grizzleys in 98 They are a power house. They are fast and can work like a mule. I did find that the bike is very top heavy and could tip without much effort. It seemed to run really hot as well. I have drove the Kodiac and I felt it was a lot better. Not quite as much power but still a fun ride. Plenty stable. I chose the Sp H.O. this last month so far so good. It is comfy lots of power Wish I could own both.

My son has a 2000 griz and he complains about two things, one not having true four wheel drive and two it wheel hops when spinning. He wants to buy a locker front end, and 28" tires. He gets mad in the mud, my H.O.goes better in the deep stuff.

The heaviest thing I ever seen a Grizz haul is my son and nephew, together that adds up to be about 550 lb.

packrat,
Tell your son that there is a locker available for his Grizzly. I have one on order myself. I agree with your son on the limited slip front dif, but I haven't really noticed wheel hop all that much.
