Default 2000 yamaha badger valve timing issues?

hi everyone this is my kids 2000 badger i am having issues with. after last winter it started giving me trouble starting, it wouldn't start with the electric start, would crank good, but not start, had to pop start it everytime, after it was hot sometimes it would start by the starter. so i figured the compression was low and it was so i pulled it apart and put new rings in it even though the old rings looked good still put it back together and lined up the timing marks to where i think they should be, which is the t mark on the stator and the line on the cam gear but it still isn't starting even after trying to pop start it. i'm left to think that one of the valves isn't sealing correctly and letting compression escape. anyone have any other ideas of what it could be ? could i still have the timing off even though i lined the marks where they should be? and i cleaned the carb good even tried ether to get it going and no start. not even a sputter or attempt to try to start.

Seems to be a common problem really,..... Check valve clearance when dead cold. this has helped me cure the hard start problem. Could also try a new battery. there's a fine line for "enough power" to start with on these little dudes if the timing is not perfect. Your marks are probably no issue,... if it runs at all. Bad valve clearance can cause the low compression readings too.

Another weird point to make,.... Check and make sure you have fuel in the tank.... I ran my battery down last week on mine, simply because it had an empty tank. I know you said you tried "pop starting it" but if it has no spark, or no fuel,.... it's not going to run, so check those two items also. Other than that, I'm gonna be at a loss for explanation.

You're not saying it won't crank, are you? like the starter won't turn?.... Just clarifying.....

Cool,.... You could do a poor man valvfe job on it before you have it done to ensure it will do the job,.... Fold a piece of fairly fine grit sand paper in tow and put it in the valeopening between the valve and seat and turn it around a few times to sand the two pieces to a fair fit.... Then try and start it up.... if it runs OK,... then a good rebuild may be the best repair. I've been doing this for 30 years on lawn mowers to verify my valve was indeed the issue,.... doing this gave me a year of running lawn mower almost every time....
