Question 98 Wolverine issues, Please help me!

I just bought 98 wolverine on friday. I knew it had some issues, but I assumed it was a dirty carb. It starts up pretty easily and will idle all day, if I give it gas in neutral it will rev up but not as quickly or as high as it should. If I try to drive it around it drives but stops accelerating a little after a quarter throttle and will not go any faster. Also when I start it sometimes it backfires through the carb and dies. When it is running gas sprays out of the intake side of the carb when I rev it up. I have already cleaned the carb several times and checked the timing. The timing is correct and I do not think the carb will get any cleaner, I let it soak in chem dip for three hours. I thought the exhaust may be clogged so I disconected it for a second and started it and flames came out! If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate the help, I am stuck!

Try disconnecting the the left handlebar switch![the one behind lever] just see what happens it could be bad and ignition thinks atv is in reverse or parking park on.. just an saftey switch to retard ignition..... Just an guess... I have had serveral yamaha having this problem...Good Luck.

Right on man, thanks for the advice. I will try it when I get home from work tomorrow and let you know how it works. Does anyone happen to know what the stock jets should be on this machine? The carb needle is set at the lowest notch, meaning the needle is letting in the most fuel. it should be at the middle one in stock form correct? It has a uni filter on it but the rest of the machine appears stock.
