Your battery must be good if you can jump it from the soleniod, so start back from there, make sure the start relay is pulling in, or isnt loose, check for loose connections, and make sure the ground is good in the starting circuit. Might be a good idea to get a wiring schematic to make tracing wires easier.

The solenoid is basically a heavy duty relay, that completes the path for the positve voltage from the battery to the starter, the small wire comes from your start button, that pulls in the contactor and allows voltage to your starter, so you could test it like a relay, remove the battery wire from it, put your meter acrosse the big terminals and push the start button, the ohms reading should drop to 2-5 ohms, or even less, with a good connection. If it doesnt, either the solenoid is bad, or its not getting full voltage to the terminal the starter button hooks to. Check for 12 volts to the small terminal when you push the starter, if that is good, your solenoid is probably bad, if you have weak voltage there, could be a bad relay, fuse, or the bare wire you found. Try jumping battery voltage to the terminal for the starter button, and see if that pulls in the solenoid and spins the starter, if so, you have a wiring problem from the start button to the solenoid.
