Default 99 blaster in gear but feels like neutral

posting for a friend, he was following me today and while going up a hill(not steep) in 1st gear it just stopped moving....this blaster is a recent purchased and the previous owner just put a new clutch in...so is there a woodruff key that can sheer on the clutch? it shifts into every gear but it just rolls like its in neutral...

Hard to believe the clutch can be gone so fast when the day before it felt great, no slipping or anything to just nothing at all...but I guess that's where I'll start...

didnt realize tusk was a bad clutch, i ride polaris these days for the auto trans so its been years since ive tore into a 2 stroke...used to ride kawi mx bikes and any clutch ive had would slip b4 it went out.....so if its the clutch, what am i looking 4? i know to check the plates and basket but if they look good, what could cause this?
