High Low Gear Probs

So the kid before me didn't know about the high and low range gears. Thought it was just for reverse. I have been having issue locking it in. Wanted to know the correct way to lock it in high gear and low. Any tips?

Hold down the foot brake while changing the gears. Its some kind of Yamaha safety thing.
