Bikes in the dunes
#1
I just thought I would pass this on. I found this on another forum that I go to for enduros. The bike in question is a drz400s (thumper).
Lately, I have seen a lot of people from this forum posting about racing a bike(2 or 4 stroke).
I thought this topic was interesting. I'm sure some people here will have fun with this.

"Had my DRZS in the dunes this past weekend. It worked great! Did a lot of drag racing, I was very surprised. I beat all of the 400ex's, 250 motocross bikes, Raptors and even beat some Banshee's! But there was this damn YZ 426 out there that I couldn't even touch. I think it had a lot to do with gearing. The two guys I went with had a Raptor and a Banshee. I was very disappointed with the Raptor. Everyone talked them up so much, about how they would out-run a Banshee and how they had better suspension, not even close.
The Z pulled really strong in the soft sand, it would have been even better with a bigger rear sprocket. I was running 14/45. But I also did the airbox mod and rejetted to a 150 along with a Big Gun exhaust. I was the only bike out there winning drag races with blinkers and a tag! I had one little problem with the Z, every once in a while, it would cut out going up steep dunes. I was almost like it was running out of gas, but it had plenty. Anyone had anything similar happen?"

I would let you know which forum this is...But for one it is against the rules of this forum...And all the guys are very good about discussions...you never see anyone cutting another bike down...win or loose they are all out to have a good time.

DRN???
Yep, bikes tend to do pretty good in sand drags against all but the really hopped up Banshee's
Less drag, less weight, more power....
Last year a friend had an RM250 out there that as long as he got a descent holeshot could lead most of the pack.
You'll probably have a hard time with the YZ426, they are putting out quite a bit more peak HP than the Z does.
My 39 FCR (which is what the Z has also), will cut out a bit in wheelies and really steep climbs when the jetting is fat - something to check anyway....

Gabe:
Yes: I agree with you...It's often hard to explain the weight concept on this atv forum. Most of the guys are thick headed when it comes to admitting that "your machine is not the fastest. There is always something else out there to surprise you.
That was just one of the 20 plus posts that mention bikes racing quads.
I have not had the hesitation problem with my drz...But I bought it for different reasons than a full out moto crosser. I needed a fun way to get back and forth to work and ride at camp on all those fire roads. (they are not open to quads)
Wheelies are a dream. I will say...I don't want to hear anyone complaining about changing jets on a banshee or any other other quad until they take a look at the octopus of hoses under the drz' seat.
