Default yamaha yfm 200 help

Hi guys and gals i'm new to the site and thanks for having me. I have a yfm200 that sat for 15 years in storage. the guy told me something happened but didn't remember what. He dropped it off and asked me to get it running for him. Im a 2 stroke man and haven't worked on 4 stroke very much . I have done the normal cleaning Ect. even bought a new carb. Timing is my question when i see a T through the inspection hole that helps hold the shifter down????. Where is the mark on the cam gear suppose to point??. at the top of the gear hole at the V or opposite the top pointing down. I want to start there and move on to the valve specs after i confirm timing. Or is this all wrong for this model??

To find tdc without being all confused about it is to turn the flywheel and concentrate on the intake rocker arm only. Watch for the rocker arm to push the valve down and when it starts to come back up look for the T mark on the flywheel. This would be tdc and you can then check/adjust valve clearance.

That's what tdc means. Piston is at top dead center.

If it only runs with the choke on then either you have a fuel supply problem to the carb, tank vent line may be kinked, jets may be the wrong size or clogged up.

Do you have the air box and filter installed?

That may be part of the problem. Get a new filter and see how it does.
