Hello everyone,

I know that this is an ATV forum and that I have received some valuable infomation on this forum in the past and present, I'd thought I would post a question in regards to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I was thinking about buying a Jeep with the 4.0I six instead of the 5.2L V8 for gas mileage. If there are any jeep owners out there, can you please tell me if the 4.0I six will produce enough adequate power to tow 2 ATV's, which weigh about 800lbs and a trailer that ways 350 lbs. and not struggle? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

IronBear

Iron Bear, I own both a 88 Cherokee and a 93 Grand, both with 4.0l. My 88 has 355 stock gears with slightly larger than stock tires and it easily pulls 2 wheelers/ trailor 70mph in OVERDRIVE. My 93 Grand has 323 gears with stock tires and also weighes 500-600 lbs more than the Cherokee. Still pulls great, but usually need to leave it in drive to avoid to much downshifting.
The cherokee get about 18-20mpg highway. The Grand gets 20-22mpg highway. (without trailor)
My 88 has 220,000 miles on the original drivetrain.

I can not help you out with the V-6 but I do own a Grand Cherokee Limited with the big V-8 and it is all power. Uses a lot of gas though. Up here a full tank costs 57$ (can) and lasts between 420 kms and 520 kms. It guzzles but it tows my double trailor and quads just fine. It hardly ever downshifts when highway driving.

Test drive both because once you have tasted the big power it's hard to turn back.

P.S. Aren't the 4x4 drive systems different from one motor to the other??

Hi,
Since you asked for opinions I will give you mine. I own a Grand Cherokee with the V8 engine and my good friend owns a regular Cherokee with the 4.0 inline 6. I get better gas mileage than he does, have TONS more power and the engine runs much smoother with much less vibration. The resale is better with the V8 and your engine won't have to work as hard to tow. The 4.0 is a decent engine and is for sure no slouch when it comes to power and if your getting a good deal on that Jeep you are considering it shouldn't be a reason not to get it, just be aware of the downsides. When I first got my Grand I was getting about 18-20 (not towing) mpg freeway at about 80mph. I have since put a factory Mopar performance computer in it and now I get about 24-27 mpg fwy, the only downside is I have to run premium gas in it or it pings a bit under load. The vehicle is primarily uses as my wife's grocery-go-getter but I did once tow my 3 place ATV trailer with it once and it did very well (not as good as my '00 Ford Powerstroke but that's another story ) and got about 17 mpg. My friend towed the same trailer and got about 12mpg. The 4.0 liter is capeable of producing good power but has to get worked much harder to get it out). The Grand is a great vehicle and no matter which engine you choose you will most likely be happy with it, I know we have been with ours.

I have a 92' 2wd Cherokee with the 4.0L. I have pulled a really packed 6'X12' U-haul (I've used them 3 times, largest u-haul has). I had to take a 400 ex, washer dryer, and the rest of the house stuff (tv's and everything else) from Florida to Ohio through some mountains. With that trailer it will top out at 80 mph floored on flat ground. Through the steapest mountain pass to Ohio I had trouble keeping 70 in 3rd gear. I have 172,000 miles on it other than regular maint I've replaced alternator, 1 motor mount and could use a couple gaskets, but that's it. You'll be happy, my brother just bought one and I'll highly reccomend it to anybody.

You would be surprised to know the 5 speed model will top out at 125mph in 4th and mine will do right at 130 mph. The speedo only goes to 85 but GPS, and my probe GT are pretty reliable speed measurment. (hey you gotta find these thigs out, and 100 miles of straight desert road is boring.)

Gas milage around town is 13mpg and highway 19.5mpg is the best I've had. little low probably due to driving style and 235 BFG AT tires.

I have neither of these, BUT I have a 93 Ranger with 4.0L V6. We got a V6 for gas mileage...hu...how stupid I've been. I pour 60-70 liters and it last around 400km (250 miles). I drinks like crazy. Whatever car you get, get the newest possible...modern engines/gearboxes are MUCH better for fuel consumption.
The new body Grand Cherokee has a smallish V8 (4.7L), and it drinks less than the old 6cyl 4.0L. A good bet, but for sure more expensive.

Well i work on the things all day long and i use to own a grand with the 4.0 6cyl. Dont even consider gas milage as a factor. I use to check the average mpg on the trip computer that most of them have. My finding were that most of the 6cyl average 16 or 17 and most of the v8 average 16 or 17 . The reason is the the 6 needs to work harder to make the power it does. So it requires more gas. They are both near indestructable engines with a slight edge in durability going to the 6.

I had a '96 GC with a V-8. I had a shift kit & a K&N FIPK too. The biggest difference I think between the 4.0L & the 5.2L is from 30mph on up. The V-8 just outmuscles the 6cyl once out in the open. Now I've got a gas guzzling 2000 Dodge QC w/ Off-Road PKG 360V-8 & 4:10's to go with my gas guzzling 1969 International 3/4ton 4X4 truck !
