Ever have to replace a stripped oil plug?
#1
Ok, so maybe it wasn't such a good idea to allow my son to change to oil in his Blaster while I was down the street. How was I to know he was going to get real excited and maybe tighten the drain plug "just a little to tight"? I have been trying to help build his confidence when working on "mechanical things".
I guess that Yamaha doesn't do what Ford does with their drain plugs. (My other son sort of stripped out the drain plug in my truck about 5 years ago[of the two of them, he is the "mechanic"]. Anyway, Ford makes the actual bolt weaker than the pan so if you were to over tighten, the bolt strips - NOT THE PAN! Unfortunatley, the Yamaha Blaster has a really, really strong bolt and a really soft (weak) case.
So, here is the problem: The case is stripped out on the Blaster - Does anyone have any idea what size tap I need to use to rethread the hole, and what is the best way to avoid getting any metal shavings into the crankcase? (Now would be a good time to mention that a magnet will not work because the case is some kind of aluminum / pot metal).
Any help you all could provide will be greatly appreciated... We are leaving on an ATV trip in 5 days, (and he would be REALLY upset if he could not bring his quad because of a simple mistake).
THANKS!

Check at your local auto part store...
They have oversize self tapping plugs that will fit the hole perfect. these units also have a separate plug in the center so you dont hace to remove the whole unit,
Good luck

I had to have the same thing fixed on my KX250 transmission drain plug. The local mechanic I use (a motorcycle repair/racing shop) retapped the hole, then ran clean oil through the case from the fill hole out the drain hole to flush any metal out, and installed a new drain plug for $25.
Good luck,

kidding
Take the plug to a nuts n bolts store and have them find a suitable upsized replacement and a the tap to go with it.
