Banshee overheating
#1
I have a friend that I was riding with last weekend that was having a problem with his Banshee overheating. I told him that he is probably running too lean but he said that he jetted it to Toomey's recommendation. I told him that I'd help him jet it this weekend but told him that I'd post a message to see what people are using as a starting point.
He has Toomey T5's, a 2 into 1 Uni filter with a K&N outwear (hanging right off the carbs). He's running 30 pilots and 300 mains. His needle is on the 4th position. He's running 22cc domes in his cool-head.
I was wondering what other people with a similar setup run in an elavation such as Glamis/Yuma (this is where we were when it was overheating).
Thanks.

That sounds plenty rich... for any sea level... I ran 280s at 600ft without a problem with Toomeys and a cool head.
I can tell you where your problem really is. The water pump gear. They are JUNK!!! I have replaced 3 of them since 98. The gear is plastic and slips really easily, then you get cooling problems.
I bet if you pull off the clutch cover and check the gear its bad. I buy replacements now 2 at a time. Also a pro design water impellor will really help with the cooling, moves water a lot better, but it still uses the cheesy yamaha plastic gear to drive it. This is a COMMON problem.
If anyone knows of a steal water pump gear please let me know.
PS the parts are like 7 bucks for the gear and 2 for the water pump gasket.

Mingoglia,
As far as the jetting question, no one can say exactly if your jetting is correct. Each banshee is different. At least that is how it seems from my experience.
Before I had any porting done, I ran a coolhead w/18cc domes, toomey t5's, straight k&n's off the carbs. and I had to run 300/310 main jets at my altitude of 4500'.
You need to jet each banshee seperatly.
BansheeBrad is right, the stock water pump gear is not the best design. I have been thinking about making one out of aluminum, any one with suggestions or comments on that let me know.
I have been running the coolhead, billet impeller, and an inline super cooler (custom made). I have also added recommended amout of water wetter to the coolanol.(whether it works or not I am not sure). But I have monitored the coolant temp and cylinder temp and have averaged between 10 and 15 degrees cooler than my buddies banshee. He does not have the billet impeller or inline cooler.

I had my shee heating up as well when I was out riding/racing. So to fix this I bought the toomey rad, which is twice as thick as a stocker, and fits like a glove. It has really helped in keeping the motor much cooler now, and I would highly recommend this to every shee owner.

Pro design does make a metal impeller gear for the water pump on the banshee. I have changed mine and had no problems with overheating at all.
You can see by the design of it..that it moves the water better.
When I removed the stock gear, it was melted pretty good. The only downfall is that the pro design impeller is around $89. But if it saves a melt down..it's well worth it IMO.

just a note on the gear, when it goes it will fill the bearing with melted plastic.. I used a dental tool to pick the plastic out of the bearing..
Good luck

You know what....now that I read your post...I mis spoke. I bought the impeller from pro design. My local machinist made me the gear. He owed me a favor.
I'm sorry about that. I will ask him if he still has the design. (tooth pitch..etc) If he does I'll let you know on the price. I can't imagine it would be much. He seems to bang out parts at quite a fast rate.
