Could i run 104 or even 110 octane in my quad? It has 10.25:1 compression and im not sure. If i could run the high octane what would it do performance wise? anything at all? thanks a lot

Warrior3443,

I noticed you're from Henderson. Do you race? If so, where at? Ever been to Echo Valley, or WKSX? Just wondering.

warrior3443,

I haven't raced there, but have practiced many times. A buddy of mine does race up there a lot. He's #71 on a red 2001 Honda 400EX with a black seat. It has an FMF exhaust, Renthal bars, and Ohlins front shocks. He's a fast rider, and hard to beat.

Hope you can get your quad straightened out soon, and have a chance to race. Echo Valley is a nice track, and big. Maybe when you start racing, I'll see you there. Good luck on the track.

with your piston you dont need race gas and if you use it, you wont notice any difference, except for an empty wallet. Just use premium pump gas and you will be fine.

sAyIt_fmf:

You said that pre-detonation could be cause by too high of an octane rating, but I have been told exactly the opposite by several others, including mechanics.

What I was told is that fuel with a lower octane can pre-detonate in a motor with higher compression because the pressure is greater. The lower octane gas will combust from just the heat and the pressure before a spark is fired. When this happens, the piston is still moving upward and the pre-detonated fuel is trying to force the piston back down (opposing forces). This causes major loss of power and can damage your piston.

Banshee98 - you are correct.

I'm no expert but a little research (from a 76 race fuel dist. site) revealed the following info:

"Octane is a measurement of a given gasoline's ability to resist detonation, spark knock or ping. A higher Octane rating provides greater resistance to part-throttle detonation.
Detonation is an abnormal combustion phenomena beginning after the spark plug is fired. As the gasoline in the end gas zone, or on the side opposite from the spark plug, reaches the temperature or pressure that it can no longer withstand the pressure and temperature, it self-ignites and detonation occurs. Detonation reduces the horsepower output for a particular engine, so you're best off to have an octane suitably matched for engine demand to prevent detonation."

Yes...you guys are correct...I type so fast half the time, that I don't take the time to read my post before I hit submit. change the word "high" to "low" . There fixed.

Sorry about that. I totally understand the concept....just an error on my part. Everyone makes mistakes.

But on another note...it is a rare condition. I would not worry about that too much.
