Raptor clutch suggestions
#1
Does anyone know of a good aftermarket clutch kit for the raptor
other than the Barnett Dirt Digger Kevlar.I've had this quad 9 months
and raced it twice. Both times frying my clutch, and both times going from 1st place to DNF. I'm not completely stupid. I've been racing bikes for years, and know how to properly use a clutch.
Both times. Same symptoms. Racing bike hard in tight woods. Clutch gets hot,but doesn't slip. Rather it engages more giving less lever action. Occasionally you can get it to an open straightaway and run
it to cool it down and your ok. If not you'll keep loosing lever than the clutch will just "smoke" and it's all over.
Is my engine oil getting too hot, and weakening my springs?
Are stock clutches not designed to last, by fat guys that ride the
sh** outa their quads?
Is this possibly just a problem with my quad?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Signed

I sort of have the same syptoms but I'm not slipping the clutch. Here's what happens, I shift into 2nd let the clutch out and punch it-It seems like the wheels are spinning but they are not and the RPMs shoot up. It goes but it takes a second for the clutch to "grab" and then it really takes off. Do I need some thing "Heavy Duty"?

RAPTORLIPS,
I'm about ready for my SECOND(!) Barnett Dirt Digger. The exact same symptoms as you mentioned, and no I'm not ignorant as how to ride quads either. This last time, I recognized that the clutch was going immediately. I salavaged it enough to be able to still ride on it, but it still has that "smoked" smell and a different feel to the clutch action now.
Do you think that it has anything to do with the half-sized clutch plates? The Banshee has all full size ones and I NEVER EVER had a clutch problem with the 'shee and I rode it in the woods almost exclusively, so you know I had to work the clutch quite a bit.

Bash,
So what other alternatives are there? Barnett usually makes a good clutch, atleast I haven't ever had any problem.
I do know of another company making heavy duty clutches, Sparks Racing, but only the plates for 14.00 each.

Swytak,
I'm not sure if we have any alternatives. I need to check something before I get too bent out of shape. When I had my first Barnett put in, it was before they actually had a kit, so my dealer frankensteined me one together from a Barnett Banshee kit and had to take the half-sized plates from a Blaster kit, but the blaster ones were regular fiber. If I'm real fortunate, I'll check it and find out that only the half-plates are toast.
If I get time, I'll take a look at them this weekend.

I'll tell you what the clutch problem is. It has nothing to do with the plates. Both the stock plates and Barnetts will work fine. The problem is the Basket. The basket does not flow enough oil to properly lube the clutch. To solve this you can either modify your stock basket by drilling bigger holes in it, or you can buy a Hinson basket, which has huge holes to flow alot of oil.

did you do this mod to your basket? Or do you have a Hinson basket?
If you, or someone you know has done this mod to the stock basket.
Some tips on "how to" would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
