I recently bought a pretty beat up yamaha timberwolf 4x4. The front wheels are the only wheels that drive, and the engine makes a distinctive clanking noise as it runs. Do you think the clanking noise could be the flywheel? What do you think about the rear wheels not driving? Could it be worked on or possibly fixed at home?

Just thought I would ask you guys before I take it down to the dealer and splurge big bucks. Thanks for your help!

The "clanking" noise could very well be a valve adjustment issue. I'm not familiar with the adjustment procedure on the timberwolf, however.
If you're comfortable wrenchen', you may want to pick up a service manual for the timberwolf. You'll be able to save a lot of money and get to know your quad a lot better.

something is messed up in the shaft drive or in the gears in the pumpkin. and that stuff is expensive.

try to find out what is wrong your self. If you need to that will save you a 100 or so bux if you take it to the stealership. Also, the clanking noise could be something to do with the drive gears that the 2 shafts hook too. And yes, once you get into there you start spending some major money!
