Banshee stalling...
#1
I went for my first trail ride with the Banshee tonight. I am very pleased with it...even on the tight trails. I am running the stock 20" tires, so it bottoms out a lot...guess I'm going to throw 22"s on it.
Anyway, for some odd reason at random times when I stop the quad it just stalls out, almost like you shut the gas line off. About 5 mins after I got it warmed up I took it up the road and back, and then let it idle for a second. Then I drove it about 200ft and stopped it...when came to a full stop the quad started getting really doggy, and the revs started to drop. I gave it some gas and it picked up slightly, but not very much...then it just died. I kicked it over and it started right up with 1 kick, then it sat there idling without even touching the throttle. I took it around my house and then went to stop again and it did the same thing...just like I had reached down and shut the gas off...it just died. I went inside and got my helmet, and kicked it back over and it started again first kick. Anyway, it did it randomly throughout the ride whenever I would stop (I think it did it 3 or 4 times when I stopped). The weird thing is that it idles fine and it runs great...no sputtering, no skipping. Any ideas? If you need more info just let me know. Thanks.

ahahah...again, I check ATVConnection the minute you ost a prob...fast reply on the way!! hehe
maybe you're slightly rich (dirty air filter...elevation...whatever cause), and it bogs it down until it stalls...try unscrewing the air screws (remember...BOTH sides...this ain't no Polaris!! ahahah)
maybe you got some crap in the tank or more likely in a carb bowl...carb cleaning
You might want to get new plugs. Doesn't cost much and one thing is sure, the plugs are OK (I constantly do it, change plugs, and see if it still acts the same)
Does it only do that in neutral? Is it the same/worse when in gear and clutched. When it stalled, take the plugs out and see if they are wet or dry (lack of gas...or too much). Can you prevent it from stalling by giving it some throttle? Or does it stall instantaneously (sp?) with no possibility of getting back at it?
Sure you don't forget to clutch it before braking with the rear brakes? Sounds dumb...but from a Polaris rider...expect everything

Zorro you must have E.S.P.!
I think that I'll probably have somebody that knows what they are doing look at it so I don't screw anything up.
I don't know much, but for some reason I think it is carb/fuel related. Probably like you said.
Nope, it doesn't only do it in Neutral...Every time it has done it I have come to a complete stop and I am still in gear (yes, I remember that there is a clutch on this one ).
Nope I cannot prevent it from stalling by giving it the throttle. It seems to prolong the dieing sequence a little bit, but it still stalls after like 3-5 seconds anyway. Like I said, it's almost like if you were to turn your gas off and run it until it dies. Once it starts dieing there just no way to stop it...it just slowly bogs down. It doesn't instantaniously die.
I think I will take your advice and have somebody take a look at my carbs to make sure they are clean.
The funny thing is, like I said, it idles perfectly fine, and it runs great the rest of the time. It is just occasionally when I stop, that this happens. I would guess like 20% of the time. 1 out of 5 stops...maybe even less.
Other than that..I had an awesome time riding tonight. The Banshee is a really fun quad. I actually had ridden them a lot before, but it was a friends quad (he had two at the time) so I didn't dare to "have fun" with it.
Thanks again.

Well the quad did it last night and the night before as well. It had gas in it from the person that owned it before me. I am not sure of the Brand of oil, but he was mixing 20:1.
Now I have drained out all of his gas, and I am running 92 octane gas with AMS oil, mixing 100:1 (actually I am running richer than that, I am running 1 bottle to every 5.2 gallons rather than 1 bottle to every 6 gallons). I know a lot of people are going to say not to run 100:1, but my neighbor and my other riding buddy have owned a total of 5 Banshee's between the two of them, and they were all running this mixture. They had never had any engine problems at all, with any of the quads. My friends 1998 Banshee ran almost 4 years on this mixture and was never rebuilt...it ran very strong (he recently traded it towards a 2001 Banshee...as far as I know, it is still running strong).

To me it sounds like it is rich in the midrange and when you ride around it loads with excess fuel and when you try to idle after riding it a while it loads up from the excess fuel that built up... This is a stretch, just throwing some ideas out there. Maybe you could lean the idle screws (turn out) and/or drop the needle 1 notch and see what that gets you. Good luck.

20:1 ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
That's crazy too much!!
Get new plugs, and mix 50:1 ... 100:1 seems a quite lean to me...
I'd say 20:1 was definitely wrong!!
See if it still does it with your new premix

I'm running the AMS 100:1 oil...they make a 50:1 as well, but it is not available at the place near where I ride. Like I said, my neighbors quad was running that for almost 4 years before he sold it, and it never needed a rebuild. I thought it seemed a little lean too, but it seems to work. Anybody else run that oil?
I think the guy I bought it from was running it 20:1 cause he saw it in his owners manual (actually, I think he said he is running a little richer than recommended in the owners manual). I don't have the manual, so I don't know.
Maybe I should pick up some 50:1 and run that?
Thanks.
