How powerful is the 2002 Griz?

I currently drive a honda 450s, and am thinking of selling it for one of the new grizzlys. I'm just unsure of the power the auto trans can put out, and how much the belt can take before it slips. I know the griz boast a 660 motor, but is its low range strong enough to light up a set of mud tires. This may seem like a stupid question but I've never driven and automatic trans atv, much less any grizzly. I now on my foreman, in certain situations I can blast through mud holes in second gear. This is with a set of 27" mud bugs mounted all the way around (this is with a new pipe, jet kit and k&n filter). You may think, "well thats good enough to play in the mud with" But I like the locking option in the front end of the grizzly and its new suspension. And as we all know, you can never have enough power. So if anyone can give some advise from personnal experience, or other info I would appreciate it.

well the polaris qauds are some of the best mudding quads ever built, and they have the auto tranny's so if the tranny on the 660 is anything like the polaris it will be one hell of a mudder.

Last wk,I rode tested the new Grizz and the new Kawi twin at my local dealership while I was passing out my ASI safety cards.Keep in mind that the parking lot would not allow for either ATV to reach speeds above 20mph.

I must say that I was very disappointed in the low end power of BOTH ATVs.NEITHER ATV would wheelie from a stand still in low or high range on a ASPHALT parking lot.Im am now very certain that my lightly modded Xplorer should smoke either of these.I liked both ATVs features,however,I did expect more low end.

This weekend I'm going to the dealership to get a closer look at the grizzly. I might do the test drive thing myself. But, like you said, its hard to tell much with a small area to ride in. If I do, I'll reply and let you guys know what I think.

Muddy four life, I picked up a new Grizzly two weeks ago and I too was not overly impressed with the power. I traded in a 2000 Grizzly and it was much quicker off the line. Well I now have 11 hours on it and it is really starting to come alive. The top end on the 2002 now tops out at 68 MPH more than I will ever need out on the trail. The ride is fantastic the handling supperb. If it were not for the fact that the front differential went out of it all ready I would be tickled pink. Now before all the Polaris guys jump all over Yamaha let me explain what happened to the differential, one of the bearings was short a ball or two. This could happen in any manufacturing plant. I have owned 7 Yamaha dirt bikes and quads and have never had problem one untill now. I would highly reccomend the new Grizz to anyone looking for a truly state of the art utility quad. By the way a friend of mine picked up a new 650 Kawasaki this thing rips of the line and then builds slowly to about 72 MPH ( checked with GPS ) fast quad terrible ride handels like a Ford explorer with one flat tire. I was definitley not impressed. Trying to hold on to that lever to lock up the front end can get tricky when bouncing over rocks and ruts. Well goodday

I'm glad you brought up the fact that your front diff went out, is your yamaha warrenty going to cover that? I've heard of many horror stories concerning yamaha's failer to uphold warrenty agreements.

Gentlemen,
I have a buddy who just bought a 02 Grizz and we took it out for the first time 2 weekends ago.
I ride an 86 ATC 250R, which is geared down 1 tooth on the front sprocket to reduce top end and give me a little more torque in the mud, etc. Every guy I ride with (mostly Polaris' Sportsmans) get's smoked by my 3 wheeler in a flat out drag. Then I raced the grizz. Man, is that thing fast!!! I couldn't gain ANY ground on him until I hit the top of 5th, and shifted in 6th. After that, he was mine, but up to about 60 MPH, he held me off. I couldn't believe it. Later that day, we switched wheelers, and I cannot tell you how impressed with the power over a Sportsman HO this thing has. It flat out HAULS. Would dust a Sportsman HO anyday, anywhere. The ride is magnificent (as is with the HO), and the suspension and ground clearance are great. Let me put it this way: I had my heart stuck on a buying a used TRX 250R because I love that 2 stroke punch, but after riding his wheeler for about 10 minutes, I've changed my mind and am currently looking for a silver model Grizzly. I can't stress enough how much power this things got. It gave me a good idea of the power a Raptor must have.
If you're looking for a 4x4 atv, you can't go wrong with this one. True, you can't ride wheelies with it, but if you want to do that, buy my ATC. It'll wheelie till the cows come home. Besides, a different clutch spring will fix the low end punch so you can have your goofy wheelies.

Muddy4life, you've got to be joking if you think that your Xplorer will "smoke" a new Grizzly. What feels like a lack of low end power is, (according to the dealer) a result of the clutching. I'm sure that anyday now there'll be a bunch of clutch kits on the market and any one who judges power by the ability to do wheelies will be impressed.

Bansheeboy... I hope you are joking about this "tire problem" being Firestones fault and not Ford's!!!

Have you paid any attention to this? If it was Firestone's fault, and Ford was trying to do the "right thing" by recalling all Wilderness AT's on all their vehicles, don't you think they would be trying to get those tires off the road ASAP? Of course they would.
I have a '01 Ranger w/ the same tires that have supposedly had all the problems... guess how long Ford gave me to change my tires out? 6 stinking years!!! Now that is NOT a company that is worried about safety! An average driver (or so they say) only puts 12,000 miles on a vehicle a year. 6 x 12,000 = 72,000 miles. These are only like 30,000 mile tires!!! They will be wore out long before you are "supposed" to exchange them. Ford is just trying to cover their tails cause they know they screwed up and don't want to admit it.
I have had my truck since Christmas and already have 15,000 miles on it. Meaning my tires will be completely bald by next February at the LATEST.
I will change my tires out then, cause these tires are perfectly fine!!!
