Not enough to make any real difference,
The main selling point on these Quads is
their power( Grizzly)Smooth ride(Magnum)
and 4wd capability(depends on situation),
Ground Clearence Diff between these 2 is
nominal if mesured honestly.

They are Primarly Utility Quads and
are not built for Speed, nor
could they handle excessive amounts
in any but a pure hard surface str8
line run(after all an HD Wide Glide is not as fast as a Hayabusa, and
if it was could it handle the Speed?
not a chance, by this I do not mean
that I ride any of those off-road
nor am I making any comparisons between
Road bike's and ATV's! the Point is
some things are made for Speed, some
for comfort some for work, and while
there may be some crossover, I have yet
to see any work Great in two or more
aspects, some good but never Great).

So my question to you Jamie, is when
are you going to head to the respective
dealers, w/tape measure, stopwatch and
buddy, take a test ride and make your
choice, based on what you like?

Good luck
Great Day

Jamie what do you want ? If you want speed go with a racing machine . Do we really care if the Magnum goes 2mph faster or slower than the Grizz. I have a Grizzly 99 and it goes fast enough in a trail to have a lot of fun . Charlie

I have a 00'Grizzly and wanted to know the speed between the Grizz and the Magnum because my friend owns a 400 Explorer and is thinking about trading his in 4 a Magnum and he wanted to know also.I know the Grizz isn't a racing quad but I think it is nice to have plenty of power and speed in a 4-stoke 4

Thanks for the replies,

You can disconnect the speed sensor switch on the Grizzly, which makes it "snort" at high speeds, also disconnecting it makes it run smoother. Just grab the speedometer plastic frame piece that surrounds the speedometer and pull it towards you as you're sitting on the Grizzly. Coming from the speedometer itself (on the back) you'll see about a 1 inch black flexable tube running down inside the opening under the handle bars. Follow this down to where the wires come out and you'll find two connectors, one is black with several wires, the other is white with only two wires going through it, simply disconnect the small white connector using a small screwdriver. Another tip is to disconnect the reverse cable that runs from the rear brake peddle to the front of the shifter box. I've found that shifting into reverse is much easier when this cable is removed, just make sure that you're not moving when you shift into reverse.

From my experiences riding with, not on, both quads, beleive it or not, the Sportsman was faster than the Grizzly.

I raced my uncle on his 500 Sportsman and give him a good head start and beat him bad.He said it felt like he was running backwards when I passed him.

I have raced a 99'400 Explorer and we stayed dead even on flat but when we came to a hill I started pulling ahead of him.His has 800 miles on it and he says it isnt as fast as when it was new.
