Congrats! I bought a 00 Big Bear 4x4 in September. I did a lot of research in the 400 cc class making many model comparisons. I liked the new BB but of course the Rubicons and Ranchers were not out or even available to look at and test.
Back to your question. I changed the oil at 3 hours and had to clean both oil filters because of the metal shaving accumulations. I Changed the oil again at 10 hours and had to do the same thing because even more shavings accumulated. I've read its normal to have the shavings during break-in so I hope to see very little next time around. At 10 hrs. I also changed the final gear oil and differential oil, very little shavings there.
Gas mileage per hours is great as I have never needed gas while out riding. We've done some 2 day trips too. I've had it in water just over the cylinder and it seemed to want to float. I had to bounce on the seat to get traction on the bottom of the creek.
Take good care of your machine, change the oil & gear lube more frequent than suggested in your manual, depending on your style of riding, keep up with all preventative maintenance and it should last you long time and hopefully make you feel good about spending alll that money on your Big Bear!
