Just got a Raptor!
#1
Boy oh boy!! I just got a Raptor on Saturday. Bought it off a guy in Central Texas who put an a DuraBlue Eliminator rear axle and DuraBlue front spacers on it. Also full skidplates, custom bumpers, and Posi-Lock axle nut. I put on a Pro Design intake the day I got it. It really does have a ton of power but I can't wait to make it faster.
If I modify the airbox and snorkel, do you think I'll have to rejet? I have been told they are rich from the factory and it should be OK. I'm looking for a little more HP without spending any more money right now. I am going to get an exhaust soon too but am still debating on which one. Also, does anyone have any stock front rims they'd like to sell me? My right front is a little tweaked but nothing bad. I'd like to have an extra set as I know that front rims aren't the easiest things to keep straight on a quad! Thanks and I look forward to posting more as I get acquainted with the machine. This board has really been helpful.

Sweet,One thing they are far from rich they are very LEAN!!You must jett them up even when they are stock!Go out and ride it get it hot stop and stab the gas it will miss and grab rpm very weak now slide the choke over some and try it!You need to order the Dynojett kit or KNN both are the same kit it realy helps this quad out trust me!!! Skydog speaks the truth!Your ProDesign setup is pointless without the Dynojet (or K&N Stage 2, same EXACT thing) let alone adding a pipe to the mix. Adding a Dynojet will preserve your motor (running it lean will blow it) and wake it up, even with a stock pipe. The jetting is too LEAN from the factory, helping emissions, but killing power. The Dynojet kit alone adds 10% HP over stock. Adding a slip-on pipe like Yamaha's trick GYT-R setup along with the air filter AND DYNOJET (notice you can't escape needing this jet kit) adds 30% more HP over stock. You could re-jet (per included instructions) and change the pipe in 2 hours max. That's easy HP. The cheapest place I've found the jet kit is at www.rockymountainatv.com for $50.00 plus shipping. I run the ProDesign/K&N/Outerwear/K&N Stage 2 setup on mine and it woke it up, even with the stock pipe. Congraulations on the new ride.

Thanks for the info guys. I did a search on this forum and a guy mentions air filter mods and getting some stock main jets from yamaha in 150 size. He says to put the stock 145 where the stock 140 is and then put the 150 in where the 145 was. I got the jets today at Central Yamaha for $2.95 apiece. I figure I can either ditch the snorkel and run with the lid on with some holes in it, or ditch the whole lid. The Pro Design will let me do this without the lid. What do you guys think? Am I being a putz and trying to get out for under $6.00? The wife is having sticker shock and won't let me spend any more money. Also, if you think this would work do I have to fool with the pilots, needles, clips, etc? Thanks a lot. Also thanks for the link to the club. Sign me up!

You sound like you like to re-jet. Change the mains like you said, and adjust the fuel mixture screws to three turns out. Leave the rest of it, because eventually you will want more power, and that means Dynojet. The Dynojet secret is the needles. You can spend days of frustration trying to achieve what the Dynojet kit will give you at once.

Sounds good. I don't particularly like to re-jet but just like power. Too much is never enough. Thanks for the information. I'll try it either today or tomorrow. Eventually I'll get the DynoJet kit but for now if $6.00 can get me more power with just a little grease on my hands, I'll try it. What are your recommendations concerning the airbox mods? No lid, no snorkel, etc? Thanks.

So far I've only cut the rubber flaps out of the snorkel, as per the Dynojet (there's that word again) instructions. Mickey Dunlap recommended in a Dirt Wheels "Hot Setup" section a couple of months ago to add a 2" stack in the airbox lid. This as opposed to leaving the lid off because it is more water and debris resistant. I'm not running an aftermarket pipe yet, so I haven't cut any additional holes.

OK. I just ordered the K&N jet kit for the Raptor. I figured that I only want to tear into the carbs as few times as possible and my odds are better at getting it right the first time with this kit. They only listed one kit for the Raptor at the dealer. They had a stage 3 for the Banshee but only one for the Raptor and the verbage on the catalog advertisement was the same as on the Rocky Mountain ATV site. Is this the right one, same as DynoJet? Everyone is talking about the K&N stage 2 but this is the only one I can find. I know the DynoJet is called a stage 2 kit. I got it from the dealer so I could put it in tomorrow. Do you think this is the correct kit? Thanks

I've got the K&N Stage 2 kit also. Open the package and you'll see Dynojet all over. That says something that a company like K&N would put their name on a Dynojet kit instead of developing their own. I've never seen a "Stage 1" kit for the Raptor, and the "Stage 2" handles everything from stock airbox with the modified snorkle to a full race exhaust system. Let us know how it goes.
