Big Bear 4x4 vs. Wolverine
#1
Im looking for good sport machine as well as mudding. I like the price of the big bear, but the wolverine is more sporty. There both 4wd but the big bear is selectable. What is top speed of both? Can the big bear do donuts considering it is ultily? What do you suggest?

It's really strange that Yamaha put teh selectable 2/4wd on the Big Bear and not the Wolverine isn't it?
But, unless you're going to be hauling a heavily loaded trailer most of teh time you're using the quad, I'd strongly suggest you go with the Wolverine. In fact, if you value sportiness at all, go with the Wolverine. It's a truely suprising performer.

It is a hard comparison. The Wolverine is a sport/trail type machine. It is fulltime 4wd and will go around 55 or so if you wind it out. I have only had mine to 48 but I left off as I had no more room.
The Big Bear is a utility/trail machine. It is setup more for work and slower trail rides. It will go pretty good in mud and had better mud protection than the Wolverine. The Big Bear does do donuts as I rode a new 02 last week that a friend has. It is geared very low in 1st gear. The rest of the gearing is for normal trail riding. It slides the rear end very easily in 2wd mode. It does climb pretty well and I took it up some steep hills that my Wolverine went up. I needed to use 3rd gear where I use 2nd gear on the Wolverine. The speed on the Big Bear is not turbo like but respectable. I never let it totally air out since it only has 75 miles on my friends but it was at 30 plus and still pulling. I have been told and have read that it will go around 45 to 48mph.
If you want to do sport riding the Wolverine is the one. If you want to do trail riding, heavy working, deep mudding, and rock climbing the Big Bear will be better. I will know more because my brother is getting a new 02 Big Bear in a month or so.
Both are great but are really in different classes. The Big Bear sits you more upright and on longer rides will be more comfortable. I love my Wolverine and the sportier riding I can do. My 2nd choice would have been the Big Bear because I also like slow trail rides and rock climbing.
You really need to know how you want to ride.
