My 2000 Kodiak seems to do fine in reverse. No coughing or sputtering.

You don,t even have to put it in mud or snow, just put it in reverse and give a lot of throttle. I've been on 3 diffirent kodiaks that have this problem. Surely someone can help!?

Mine cuts out also, if you find out how to override the limiter switch let me know also. I would like to have full power when backing.

Why I have not done this said alteration.

I would suspect the best way to find the
Reverse Rev-Limiter, would be to Trace the
Ignition Route and the reverse light Circuits
as it appears to be a Capacitive/Delay type
of limiter, which limits Ignition pulses
to a specified # over a given time frame,
which would explain the backfire when in
reverse.

Once the culprit is located, might be in CDI
box itself, use a coated wire or equal or
heaver gauge to Jump(bypass)the Circuit.

I am not sure if this is the right way(but it seems reasonable), and I can accept NO
responsablity for Personnal Injury, Damage
to Quad, Voiding of Warrenty or any other
Negitive Results Arising from my Suggestions.

Good Luck

On the Grizzly you can remove that cable which requires you to step on the brake peddle when you want to shift into reverse. It runs from the brake peddle to the front of the shifter box itself. Removing it won't cut off the rev limiter though.

I've been reading through the manual and find that there is a reverse switch and a speed sensor shown in the schematics. Whether these control a rpm limit I don't yet know. I will experiment awhile and let you know
