i want to install a K&N jet kit on my raptor but I am new at this. Do I have to take the carbs all the way out or just the air box to get to it? please help.

I would get the K&N/Dynojet kit, here's why:

1) New springs that change the resistance rate
2) Difference in taper on needles

Many have tried to dial-in the Raptor with mods just changing factory jets without much success...the Dynojet kit makes it easier. The difference in the taper on the needles keeps the carbs working properly all the way across the RPM range. The stock needles seem to create flatspots in the powerband.

My two cents from reading lots of posts on this forum.

Noturaptor is right on, as usual.

Not only does the dynojet/k&n kit work better, the folks at dyno jet will tell you what jet and needle settings to use for your exact setup and altitude. (Ignore the settings given in their install instructions-- they are just too generalized to be any good.) And when you change your setup or altitude, call them again to get the new settings.

Definately worth the extra $$, I think.

ps: noturaptor and I have similar setups: K&N air cleaner, K&N jet kit, modified airbox lid (cut off the back 2/3rds and throw it away), quality aftermarket slip on muffler (mine=white bros e series). Dyno tested at 49 h.p.

BTW: I prefer to remove the carbs completely. It only adds 5 mins to the project, but allows me to do the mods on a clean work bench where small parts are nearly impossible to lose.

Good luck.

As Notu said, absolutely get the K&N/Dynojet kit over just changing the main jets. The secret is in the replacement needles that come in the kit, along with the new diaphram springs. If you're going to go to the hassle of re-jetting, do it right. Reference the Raptor pipe shootout in the February 2002 Dirt Wheels, page 86: "CT actually provides the new main jets and their own design titanium needles with their pipe." BTW, I run the K&N/Dynojet kit with a ProDesign/K&N and a stock pipe and can guarentee there is a difference and that you only do it once. Just changing the main jets only affects the upper 30% of the fuel curve, leaving what Notu calls flat spots in the powerband. The Dynojet kit also comes with COMPLETE instructions, such as which main jets to use for your mods and altitude, and where and what all the pieces are. An additional note, before beginning the job, leave the fuel shutoff on the tank OFF and run the engine until it stalls. This will burn most of the fuel out of the carbs, which is less you will spill/dump on you or your quad during the re-jet process.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I got it down with no problem at all and it is running sweet. Now one more question, I run in the Florida sand would it be smart to cut the airbox or not to? How much more horse power would I gain and ect. I also have a K&N air filter and a pre- filter over that. What do you guys think?

I'd definately cut the lid. I do the Oregon dunes all the time with no problem.
