Banshee Clutch Question?
#1
Hello I was wondering if anybody out there could help me out with a question I got. After dis-assembling my banshee's clutch I found out the basket was worn pretty bad as well as the fiber plates being worn out. The basket has some pretty good ridges in it from the fiber plates. Can I take the basket off and hand file some of the ridges down and If so, how much could I file down before I start to get some noise from the slack? And last of all where would be the best place to buy a clutch kit and a basket?
Thanks for any info. Dennis

First off its sucks that nobody will respond to banshee questions. But lately I have been dealing with my clutch on my 94 banshee.
I've had to file down the ridges on a Kawasaki Tecate at the recommendation from the local shop. I actually took down approx. 1/8 in on both sides. It work great without problems. Of course with all that banshee HP I would be a little skeptical, manly because I'm extremely hard on my clutch.
You can find used stuff relatively cheap but watch out for the ridges as well as the main gear being worn. (there will be play between the gear and the basket)
Hindson clutch stuff is the way to go. Barnett clutches plates are the best and stay away from the toomey replacement clutch. I tried it and its been nothing but head aches.
Good luck.

I have the ToomeyRacing clutch in mine now. I used all 6 springs. The clutch is hard to pull in, but its worth it, no slipping at all in any gear. I don't know anything about what you want to do to your basket.
SteveNB1 - What trouble did you have with the Toomey clutch? So far the clutch is working great for me. The only thing that isn't "normal" with it is, when going from neutral to 1st gear, it slams the chain tight and turns the tires alittle. I may have it adjusted wrong, but I tried twice. It doesn't bother me, because I know if it is grabbing at full-in clutch, then when its fully out, it is 100% locked and not slipping. They said to adjust it to a circle mark on my case, but I could not find this mark, so I adjusted to the slack I thought would be best. Maybe the mark is gone cause I cut the case where my chain busted through?
Also A&S Racing makes a heavy-duty replacement clutch you may want to check out. Its about the same price as Toomey's. ($100 I think)
GOod luck

The only problem I can think of with filing the basket down would be there would be alittle play, and those tabs on the clutch plates may break. Or maybe it will just make bigger ridges, concidering now it will have play and be hitting the basket causing new ridges, only deeper. When I took my clutch apart 2 of the plates were broken. I don't know what caused this. 1 was broke in 2 or 3 and the other was in small pieces everywhere. You may be better off paying the high price for a basket, cause in the long run it may be cheaper then buying plates to replace broken clutch plates. Just my opinion, I really don't know what would happen if you filed the basket down, just what I think may happen. I would ask a good shop about it, they would be the ones to know for sure.

I had the same problem. I could not get the free play adjusted to were it would shift smooth. It would hook up but it did not shift smooth causing me to miss gears when hill shootin at glamis. The purple and yellow bikes have the rep to maintain
I had to open the cluth up four times to get it work properly. Not good on the case threads, $$ bell ray gear oil, gaskets etc.
The latest scenario is I happened to get 2 flat rear tires about 2 miles away from the truck. I was riding it back easy and all of a sudden it began to slip to the point it had to be towed. Once it cooled it work again. So now I'm nervious about getting to far into the dunes and the clutch going out.
What do you think of that?

Your best bet is to invest in an aftermarket clutch basket of your choice. If you do file your basket, as long as you do not file to much the "fingers" will not be taking any more impact due to free play, you only need to file the ridges off so your plates can still seperate! If your clutch is worn badly, I would just get a new basket. I cant remember the wear limit on the stock basket, but your local dealership should part with the info with no problems.
