the sound the chain was making when i was sliding was the transmission. were pretty sure the dogs in 2nd gear broke, i can still ride just not in second gear, now i have to drive 3 hrs to drop it off, and wake 2 weeks before it gets fixed, its going to cost 700 to a 1000 dollars to fix,

mines 2001, you don't really have to worry about, on 02 they change the gears, they made them stronger(and diffrent ratios)your just hearing normal engine noise, you can tell when your trans, is about to go out, ill never forget that noise.

If that gear is from an 01, then why does it look like it has 4 dogs instead of 3? Does 3rd have 4 dogs, even in the 01? Is that picture just deceiving me? I'm confused! If 4 dogs are present, and they break as in your picture, it looks like the 02s are gonna start going south soon, right? Hopefully not.

fellas - third does have 4 dogs.
I know exactly when they broke too. You know when you shift real fast, and it acts like it found neutral instead of the gear you shifted into? Well thats what mine did. It reved up real high cause I was on the gas. I let out of the gas then it reved down and popped into gear, and busted 2 dogs off. It still had 3dr gear, but I could barley shift it. It was hanging up not wanting to shift. As a matter of fact, first and reverse were the only gears that it would shift into smoothly. I could MAKE it shift into 2,3,4,5 gears with brute force.
When I took the engine out and took the clutch side cover off both pieces in the pic you see fell out on the work bench. I am lucky, the only damaged to the engine was the plastic oil pump gear. My parts are to be here today so I plan to be riding saturday.
CCRRaptor - you should do the work yourself, you could save lots of money. I only spent less then 200 to buy parts and shipping. Doing all the work myself
