15 Years. Beginning with the 1987 Banshee. Longer than that if you include the Moto-4 models. I'm talking about the dreaded air filter hold down design that makes it possible for the air filter to not seat correctly with you never knowing it.

Tuesday, I received a Tech Bulletin from Yamaha stating that they now have a new design that will work on all models and requires only an updated "air filter core" to make the change. It still carries the same foam filter. The foam material where this holder meets the air box has also been changed to a different material to help keep dirt and sand from entering the box.

For anyone considering the swap, they need to contact their dealer because prices will vary.

They aren't issuing a recall on this, but they are offering the update for sale. It should be cheaper than all the aftermarket conversions out there.

This update will also be implemented on all production models beginning with the 2003 model year.

Just thought I would spread the cheer. Don't you find it interesting that it took Yamaha over 15 years to realize this??

Yes it is about time. Just curious, have you recieved any tech bulletins from Yamaha regarding the Raptor? What were they about? There was a guy on here spouting off about tech bulletins on the 2002 model and wouldn't provide truths. Of course I'd be interested in the bulletins for the 2001 as well as the 2002. TIA

The Yammy weasels would never issue a recall....just an upgrade. The upgrade will still be pathetic.

The lid holding the filter never did bother me. What I don't like is that you need a screw driver to remove the lid. I think they should have clamps so you can look in there quickly and without tools.

garyc660R, That is a very good point.

I have about a dozen different tech bulletins on the Raptors for both '01 and '02 models. I will get them tomorrow and post a NEW topic on them tomorrow night for you guys to check out.

As far as THIS update is concerned, Yamaha provided a list of all the units that this airfilter update pertains to. The Warrior was on the list among others. I will get the entire list and post them on THIS topic tomorrow night as well.

KNOWSALOT how is your Blaster/250F project coming? It sounds like it would be fun to ride and build.

KNOWSALOT,
Thanks for the information.

Should I worry about my transmission just sitting there after 5 months of no use or is the Raptor transmission able to take that kind of abuse.

Yahoo chat rooms after mid-night can be quite interesting.

Chet

I got the list of models that this update pertains to.

'87-'02 Banshee...part number...5FK-14458-00-00
'87-'02 Warrior...part number...1UY-14458-01-00
'00-'01 Kodiak....part number...5GH-14458-01-00
'01-'02 Raptor....part number...5LP-14458-01-00

After getting numerous messages having to do with resale value, I decided to put the YZ250F quad project on "hold". But by no means have I scrapped the idea. Yet anyway.......

Hey Chet, watch out for the bombers in the yahoo chats.
