I am running the webcam 80-421 race profile cam, this requires a high comp piston and valve springs, plus I can tell you that while this is a good top end cam, i feel the loss of bottom end so unless you can ride full-throttle choose something else (i'm still looking for a better cam, but at altitude in NM the cam builders I have contacted are reluctant) the webam 80-411 offers a better power range and while a high comp piston is recommended it is not necessary nor are valve springs (according to webcam at least), however, if you are going to go that route i recommend going the distance piston, springs, cam, polish and port even oversized valves if you can

I will only comment on the valve spring issue. The stock springs only apply 35 pounds of seat pressure at the installed height. If you have ever seen the valve seat surfaces on one of these motors, especially one that has run a small cam on stock springs, you will know why HD springs SHOULD be used. In fact, if you watch the sites more frequently now than before, you will start seeing posts from people who have pulled valves through their motors. This could be caused by a defect in the valve material; however, I believe that it is a result of the valve bouncing and pounding itself to death. Oh, on this topic, Yamaha and their quality parts allocation system failed to anticipate the need for replacement valves. They are on a national backorder.

Speaking of backorders, Yamaha is also on back order for the reverse gear in the 2002 Raptor. This prevents 2001 owners from upgrading to 2002 gears.

All though off topic, back orders: starter clutch gear assembly (the gear onto which the starter clutch runs and usually chews up when the clutch goes bad) are on factory back order in Austrailasia........ that's right, NONE avialable anywhere in the pacific region.......... I have a very dead Raptor, new starter clutch assembly ready to go in, no gear......... considering machining and hard chroming the shaft surface to get it back into shape. Looking mighty hard now at the new Suzuki when it finally gets here..............

Work shops down under are starting to see the valve seat regression, loosing valve clearnce problems ? Time for new springs by the sounds. I've heard of guys using YZF 400 / 426 springs any ideas on this ??

sorry to hear about the lack of parts man that really sucks, too bad its not something I shucked off of mine or i would send it to you, i have my old stock springs but wouldnt recommend them. I love NZ dude that is the greenest place i have ever seen (you can tell i live in the desert), I would love to ride in spots like that, the sheep might get in the way but chasing em could be fun

Springs are not a problem here. RD Springs has updated their spring set to provide the correct installed height pressures.

I like the Raptors but I don't like Yamaha's obvious failure to engineer and test their product.

I have seen three Raptors with the valve problem and don't believe just springs is
going to fix the problem, neither is new STOCK valves. If you are having your
valves tighten up on you then you need to do something about it!! This is going to be
a BIG problem in the future as these Raptors get some hours on them. The valve
seat is being beat away and if you do normal maintenance and keep your valves
adjusted, there will eventually be nothing left.

The stock valves are on back order still but there are plenty of after market valves
out there, White Brothers, Web cam, and of course Trinity has the Ferrea 32 mm
valves.

Trinity is the only company that I have heard that has stock size high performance stainless steel valves as well as large valves. The new valves are a substantial performance improvement.
