It appears that the "seam" around the oil drain plug area at the bottom of the oil tank is leaking a bit. Has anyone else had this problem. I dont think I was rough on the plug or anything - maybe its due to vibration ?? Is this a common problem ??

same thing happened to mine where the oil line went in also. what happens is that the block that the line bolts to actually pushes through, cracking the cheap and too thin aluminum tank. you can have it welded, but i recommend something other than stock.

I had the same problem with my 01 raptor, the dealer warranted the tank and now I am extra careful not to over tighten the drain plug. I think that I started to turn the drain plug the wrong way and tightened it accidently ( wasen't thinking when I did that !!!! ) when I went to change the oil ... so I guess it was pretty much my fault! I also know that the tank is about 180.00 for a factory tank so I would look into a after market one!

Before I ever heard of a problem, I replaced mine with a Pingry tank. Just the thought of adding an extra quart of oil is what sold me. Looks trick too. Just a thought for you. www.crashers.com/ppdracing/

If you overtighten the drain plug, this will break the bottom of the tank. THis is common on the 400ex as well. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN IT...haha.

I'll second the Pingry tank. It's awesome, and worth the extra money. I tried fixing the stock tank when it cracked, and it only broke again. Spend the extra and get the Pingry tank. It fits perfect, looks very trick, much better design, holds an extra quart of oil, and has cooling holes through it. My bike rarely runs the fan after adding the tank. It's worth every penny extra over another stock tank. It just under a $100 more than the stock tank. The people at Pingry were good to deal with also. I had it in stock, and it arrived when they said it would.

I am using a Denton steering stabilizer which comes pretty close to hitting the stock oil tank. Any idea if a Denton / Pingry combo will fit ??

It depends on where it runs. I don't have one, but I imagine it runs under the tank. If it runs under the tank then it will be fine. The Pingry doesn't set any lower, but it's bigger and taller. It mounts up on the bottom exactly like the stock tank. I can try and take a good picture of mine, and post it here for you.

I have a "Tech Sheet" directly from Yamaha to all dealers talking about this problem.

Overtightening the bolt will break the oil tank, and like everything else yamaha it's not covered under warranty.

So yes they know about it.. and it's a weak/bad design
