RIDING AT CALICO GHOST TOWN AREA
#31
It runs great at those jet sizes. Its on the rich side. My needles are in the 4th groove. I'm going to change them to the 2nd groove here in a few minutes. And see how that does this weekend. When i go to the desert which is at sea level to 500' I run the 155/160 and its stronger than the 150/155 now. I'm thinking about going back to the 146/148 or 148/150 until the fall comes back because I will only be riding at higher elevations. You will enjoy the pinacles. Get off at waterman ave and go up into the mountains. Go past the resaurant way up there. Just after Rim forest there is a turn off to Blue Jay, take that. Follow it into the town of Blue Jay. There will be a Mcdonalds on the left. At that corner turn left. Follow that street around Lake Arrowhead. Once on the otherside you will be coming down a relativly steep hill, at the bottom is a stop sign. Thats highway 173. Turn left. follow that until it turns into a dirt road. A 1/4 mile or so there will be another dirt road with a sign willow creek 2 miles or somthing. Take that to the right and it will lead you to the staging area. by the restrooms there is another information sign and in a little box there might be some maps of the trails. Enjoy, cause I know you will.

Rattlesnake heaven,
An area that was previously closed has reopened. Its called devils hole. We went to it today. Saw some holes in the side of some rocks along the creek. Went over to check them out. I was creeping up to them looking in the hole in hopes of maybe spotting a cyote or even a Black Bear. (I wish) when all of a sudden i here a quick rattle, I look down to my left and not but 3' away is slithering along a 3' long Diamond Back. I wasn't looking at the ground as I was walking up to the rocks. A foot or two to the left and I'd have gotten bit. It slithered away and all was good. When we walked up the trail from the creek to where we parked our bikes I heard another quick rattle. Looked down to my right and not 3-4' was another Rattle snake. Not a diamond back this time. This one was 3- 3 1/2' long. Got some pics of this one. Played with it a bit until it slithered into its log for a home. Ran over another Diamond Back on one of the trails. It was ok, I rolled backwards to get a better look and watched it slither into the weeds. It was only 2 1/2 - 3' long. Saw a 4' long Gopher snake up there today as well. The moral of the story is, watch out fer them snakes. I'm trying to find my maps of the trails cause there were none there. If I find it i'll try and scan it and put it on the web. All the trails intertwine just about so getting lost shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy.
P.S. The needles in the 2nd groove improved the way the quad runs at these elevations and with the 150/155 mains. I think I'll leave it this way till I can get back to the desert.

Got the bikes loaded up and ready to head out tomorrow. I will watch for those snakes and keep my boots on. Thanks for the update. I called the arrowhead rangers office and had them fax me a copy of the trail map just in case there weren't any up there. If you need another copy let me know, I can scan it in and send it to you. Thanks for the update on how your raptor ran. Tomorrow will be the first real ride since the airbox, pipe, and jetting mods. I have the 148/150 in. It should do ok at that elevation tomorrow. I will probably rejet after this ride to the 150/155 based on your experience. It will also need to be rejetted come Glamis season. I'll let you know how the ride goes tomorrow night. Thanks again for all your help.

Wow, riding up there was great. Rode from Pinnacles to Devils Hole then back around to Crab Flats and Deep Creek. After Lunch we rode from Pinnacles to Lake Silverwood. Great riding and beautiful scenerery. We didn't see any snakes. We were ripping down one trail coming back from Deep Creek, we rounded the corner and there was a deer standing in the middle of the trail. She took off and watched us from about 100 yds away. Great place to spend the day riding.

wow, never saw any deer up there. You had a full day of riding. You made it accross the rocks at deep creek then? You must have made it up the waterfall area on the road to crab flats as weel. Thats a harry spot going up the falls. Coming back down is much easier. How many of the tight woods trails did you get to ride on? 3w11/3w12/3w13/3w14 etc Glad you had a good time.

I must not have gone to crab flats because I didn't see a waterfall. I was looking at the map after the day of riding and trying to retrace our tracks. We went to to devils hole first. Down the steep canyon to the creek bed below. Is this where you saw the rattlers? There is a dirtbike only trail at the bottom that we walked partially on. Next we went over to deep creek and crossed where the concrete tiles are laid in the creek. We stopped there. I still have the stock skids and did not want to try to make it through the boulders. Maybe next time. We watched two real nice jeeps rock crawl through the boulders. Then in the afternoon we headed to lake silverwood on the trail on the other side of highway 173. Your directions for getting there were perfect. Hope to meet up with you there one of these days. Is there any other places like that in the San Bernardino Mts or Idylwild? This was a great day trip for summer riding in so cal. Is there a listing of red sticker months for this area? I'd like to take my son on his LT50.

If you stopped just on the otherside of deep creek you did not get to crab flats. You have to manuever over those set of rocks and take that road all the way up the mountain to crab flats campground. The place called the waterfall is not an actual waterfall unless it was raining i suppose. . Its just a relativly steep part of the road that near the top is a very tricky part to get up. We had to actualy get off the quad and walk it along a few feet or more and manualy turn the front end pointing in the right direction, then get back on and go again. It would be very easy to flip over backward with a Raptor at this spot. 4x4 ATvs would be no problem here. Watching jeeps go up or down here is fun also. Your description of devils hole is in fact devils hole. Yes, this is where our encounters with the Rattlesnakes occured. Bring a fishing pole next time. Saw some 10-12" trout (wild, no plants here) swimming in the water there. You must not have rode any of the 4' wide trails on your trip. These are the best and they wind between the trees etc. It sounds like you stayed on the fire roads. If you go up the 15fwy, the exit before the Lake Silverwood exit is called Cleghorn rd. Get off there, there is a dirt road to your right. Park and ride that dirt road all the way to Lake Silverwood. Take some of the jeep trails off the main road, these are more fun. Red stickers are never allowed in these riding areas at anytime of the year. When my boys go they ride my other Raptor or their LT80 and 2001 Badger. Both are green stickers. We will be going back this weekend I'm sure. Let me know what day is best for you, if you can make it we will meet you up there and take you on the trails. Probably Saturday is best for us. Let me know if you're interested.

Smitty,
I was told the reason the Cannondales are red stickered is because they have a higher compression that does not allow them to pass the green **** smog test. It was a toss up between the cannibal and the raptor for me, ended up with the raptor......Supposedly the same goes for the crf450, yz426f etc..

Thanks for the reply, I thought the higher the compression the better everything burned. I've been wrong before though.
I'll be in Glamis this weekend if anybody is up for it. My buds cousins is flying in and has never seen it. I plan on sleeping in the day and riding at night at this point.

Dang smitty, its gonna be a hot one there.
Not to be the bearer of bad news but from May 1st to September 30th RED stickers are not allowed to ride at Glamis. I doubt there will be any Rangers about this time of year though. Thats according to the begginers package they gave us at the visitor center when we went the first of may. we had a RED stickered banshee with us then and didn't see one Ranger the whole day. Have a good time.
