My oil seals and right axle bearings are shot. I've already got the axle out but couldn't get the bearings out. I tried just beating them out of one side of the carrier but that didn't work. Do you have to knock the left bearing out the left side and the right out of the right side ?

Yes you do. If you can find a bar with a crook on the end, the bearings come out pretty easy. My axle was a pain getting out after my bearings took a dump....
