I need Raptor help!!!
#1
Hey guys,I have been reading alot of suggestions for my 02 raptor. The only thing I have done so far is cut out the wings in the snorkle for the airbox. The problem is the bike runs like ****!It falls on its face in every gear(when you first nail the throttle it hesitates). My neighbor did the same mod on his bike and it did the same(we did it on the same day). They were running so bad I took a rag and wrapped it around the air filter to see if it would help.It did help alot.My neighbor took his shirt off and wrapped his air filter, so we wouldn't waste the day.I hope that who ever gave out this advice would make sure to add something else to correct the problem.I would appreciate some help.Thanks...

My bike is stock. So what size jets do you suggest? Will I have to change the pipe also?I didn't think that that little bit of rubber would change the bike that much.I didn't plan to upgrade that much that fast,I have to get use to the power it has now.I do plan to upgrade, just slowly.I will change the jets,I am not sure of the size so should I buy the jet kit?

You did the easy half of an awesome mod (cut the flaps out of the snorkle). In fact, it's step one of the jet kit instructions: "With a sharp knife remove the two flaps shown in Figure C". The other half (and a bit more costly) is getting a Dynojet (or K&N) jet kit. The kit contains new main jets, needles and diaphram springs, along with detailed directions on the install. Ideal situation here is for you or your neighbor to do the mod and compare it to the stock machine. You won't believe the difference. This works with the stock pipe (the way I had mine) and also contains main jets if you want to add a pipe later. There is also information about altitude (0-3000), 3000-6000, 6000+). The power in more, and it comes on quicker, makes the response more "snappy". As it is you are dangerously lean. I would call around your area and get one ASAP. Install takes about an hour or so. When you do the install, run the motor until it stalls with the gas valve (petcock) off to drain the carbs as much as possible. This cuts the fuel spillage down quite a bit. The jet kit is well worth it.

Something else is wrong. Cutting the flaps out will not cause this problem. The fact that its the same for both bikes is puzzling. Its just not logical that cutting the flaps would cause it to do this. Getting the Dynojet kit (K&N jet kit is the same) is a great improvment over stock. Check everything over well. Try duct taping over the snorkel to simulate the way the flaps were before. If it imroves to the way it was before then, you will need to jet up. The best thing is the Dynojet kit. Good luck.

I did put back something to block the air and it did solve the problem.I was just dissapointed that it wasn't mentioned when I read about it,that I would have to jet.I thank you for the info and I am looking forward to the jetting.

Probably wasn't mentioned because, this is the first I've heard of it happening. I have another 2001 Raptor, stock, and I've cut the flaps out and have no problems like that. It does have a Pro Design Foam filter however. But that just flows more air than stock so, if it were gonna do the same to me as it has to you, it would definatly have done it with the pro flow filter. JMO. You will be pleased with the results of a Dynojet kit.

I have the stock air filter on the mine (the 02).My neighbor has a k&n filter on his (the 01).We rode each others bike and couldn't believe how the were acting. It was dissapointing mainly because we had a guy who went with us who had a 400 ex who was talking trash. We had to hear him badmouth us all day.We still won the races, but it was too close.
