I just bought this atv. i am new to this so i have a question. Top speed is about 40 mph at the most down a smooth road or dirt. Is this correct or should it go faster? It is full time 4x4 so i would think this would hamper over all speed. Just want to make sure it's running the way it's supposed to.. any other comments about this atv are welcome. like i said, this is my first atv. Using it for trails, plowing and utility.

That sounds about right. Our 2001 Kodiak will go about 45 in 2wd

Mine does about 55 or 60. I think 45 is too slow. Either something is wrong or they have a lot of variance between bikes, which I don't think Yamaha does.

55 or 60???
Indicated or GPS?
Mine won't go that fast even with the stock tires.
More like 45-50.

My 2000 Kodiak 4x4 does 53mph in 2wd and I've checked it a few times with a Garmin eTrex on flat paved road. I installed a Yamaha speedometer kit and it's right +/- 1 mph the with the GPS. It gets up to 40mph or so pretty quick but takes a little longer to get the 10-15mph.

I wouldn't worry too much if your Kodiak is a little slower. How often do you really ever need to do 50 mph? I don't think 4x4 atvs are really meant to go this fast anyway-I just check my maximum speed occasionally out of curiosity. Franky, it scares me to death to go that fast on an ATV which is why I drive a Kodiak and Recon and not a Raptor!

Right you are HillHound. I've never really understood the obsession some riders have with top speeds....while still riding utility machines. You want to go fast, get a machine made for that.
