Greetings all you Grizz owners,

I just got my new 02' Grizz and am curious about a couple things. I popped her cherry riding in the shadows of Mt. Arvon this weekend (Frogman28 should know where that is, you hang a right just as you get to the middle of God's Country). Anyway, one of the first things I noticed was that there was a fair amount of front end gear noise, whether in 2wd or 4wd. Was wondering if this is "normal", I have a feeling it is, but was just wondering. My other questions relate to the overwhelming discussions about heat shielding and floor boards. Looking for anyone's opinion here... is it worth just contacting my dealer and asking for the fix's now, rather than waiting? Has anyone gotten the shielding or additional bracing, or is it just better to just make it yourself? I didn't do any "hard" riding this weekend, I wanted to take it easy during the break-in period, just cruised mostly, so I didn't notice the bogging problem while gunning it in mud or up steep inclines either, guess I was just wondering how prevalent the bogging really is.

I think these threads are great, lots of very, very helpful information and people. Thanks for any feedback you can give.

congratz on the new grizzly!!! its kind of like being a kid again, when you first start her up and take off, aint it, lol? as for your questions. first, i agree with you totally about the break in period. it is important to wake her up slowly!
heat can be an issue, so alot of us have done some customizing to our grizzly's to prevent this. i might just have been the first to cut holes in my side panels, having done it almost 1 year ago. i saw a potential problem, and started cutting, lol. i have pics of this, if you look.
i would talk, ( complain) to your dealership over the floorboards and heat issue, and he can get yamaha to send all the parts to replace them for free!!! might take some bickering, but it CAN be done.
the noise coming from the front gears has been descussed by others too. i have never had this, so i would check the front gear fluids if i were you. others have found there's low in the past( good ol' dealers at work, lol)
the later 2002 grizzly's have had the floorboard supports allready replaced, so who really knows if yours has the origional, or replacements on it.
at 20 hours, go through it good. adjust your valves. i have done mine 3 times in 75 hours, and all 3 times, they were tight on the intake. this is not to hard of a job, and can be done yourself! get a manual, or better yet, the c.d.!!! people sell the cd in these rooms for 20 dollars shipped. it is worth every cent of that!
the only problem i have faced with my bear is water. if you go above the bottom of the fenders, you WILL flood your belt drive. this is easy to drain, but if mud gets in there, and it probibally will, you will be cleaning it all out. i have snorkled my belt system, to stop all the cleaning. keep her below the fenders, and she'll plow through anything!!! there are numerous posts on bypassing the rev limiters in here, and if you go deep, you might want to. i found the rev limiter on the 4 wheel locking diff to be a complete breeze to bypass, taking me a total of 25 minutes, and 4 dollars to do. i wish you all the best with your new quad!!! i wouldn't trade mine for anything out there!!!

Alright now...your riding in my back yard!!!

We should hook up sometime soon! I was at Roland Lake for the weekend at camp. Had the gang out there (wife's family of 43, and that's not all of 'em!). Where did you get the griz from? Yes, there are complaints of heat but i would still say it depends on your riding conditions. If you are just putting or fast trailing on the major trails, you shouldnt have a problem. It's those darn nasty, slow moving, mucky trails that give ya the fits. The side panels run 18 bucks, so i personally didnt have a problem cutting a little bit of them away. Really helps on the heat control and steam buildup in the engine area.

Are you staying with stock tires? Where are you riding mostly? Northeast of L'Anse? We ride mostly southwest of BigBay. From Champion/Ishpeming is the most common "launching" pad As you know, the triple A will take ya about anywhere ya wanna go, eh!

We could get together sometime and check your bike over to see if you have any of the "new" stuff that they are suppose to put on the newer grizzly's. The floorboard supports, well, ya just have to wait till they sag (acording to the dealer), but they WILL replace them.

If you would like, you can check out my bike in PERSON and see the mods for the limiter overrides. I would recommend doing the reverse limiter override no matter WHAT your riding stile is. But the dif lock is mostly for the "me" mudders

Welcome to the family! There are a couple of us here in the UP that love to take'm out and romp the heck out of them...so you are welcome to join us anytime....i'll show you MY backyard and you show me YOURS!

Frogman, I was on Roland Lake the whole weekend. You guys must have been the family gathering next to the boat launch, it was the only group of 100+ in the whole county, j/k. We lease the property on the south side of the lake between my dad/mom, sister/brother-in-law, my wife and I. We just picked up that lease property and are giving up the property just north of the lake on the east side of the road. My dad has the little camper on the bottom of the hill east side. We did a couple family trips to different waterfalls on the Huron and out to the mouth on Superior, had a GREAT time. I'm originally from MQT, but now "temporarily" reside below. I think I drove by your family's place a dozen times going back and forth between our camper and my parents.

Getting together to do some riding sounds like a great idea! I will be spending a week up there in August with the family again. But, coming up for a weekend sometime soon to do some riding sounds like a great idea.

Concerning the "recognized" Grizz issues... I was out doing some mudding last night, buried her in some quick sand and noticed the "bogging" thing. She sputtered a few times while in the mud and once just after I got out. I don't have any intentions of replacing the tires just yet, I see no sense in tossing aside a perfectly good set of rubber, maybe when they wear down a little. Of course I may regret that decision as I'm thumbing a ride home cause I can't get her out of the hole I'm stuck in, we'll see. Cutting some vents for air sounds like it would prove useful as well as the rev limiter overide. What exactly does the diff lock over ride do?

That is a good question....what does the dif lock override do? lol

There are a couple of speculations on what it will provide. The first and most important, is that it overrides the 22mph limiter that is set while having the dif lock on. This will give you increased wheel speed(when needed) in forward while in the muck. Some also believe that with bypassing the same wire/limiter, it will stop the "sputtering" in forward.

One of the most valuable things that i can tell you is, take your sparkplug boot off, GREASE it, and make sure to put it back on properly. It only goes on "oneway". You will see what i mean when you take a close look at it. Also, it SNAPs into place. That took care of any and all sputtering that you might incounter after hitting some water. If not, the opening of the side covers will help too. They are saying that steam is building up inside the covers and getting into the carb causing fuel-air ratio to change and sputter.

YES!!!!! i was the family next to the boat dock...the brown sided camp. We had 3 campers/the camp/two tents/screen room/etc setup there! you could not of missed us! lol I was going to bring my bikes up to camp, but it was a nightmare already with all the family there. Just wanted to keep it simple...lol

I can tell you one thing....the wife was giving me evil looks because everytime an ATV went by...i was ready to drive all the way home and get my bike!!! It was driving me nuts to hear ya all over on the other side of the lake rev'n and ride'n!! Also, it would have been nice to ride, just to get away from all the BUGS...mostly those lil biting flies...lol

Again, welcome to the family and hope you bring your wading pants!!! the Sh*t gets deep now and then

hey rubi 500,
i bought the cd off of a man named greg in the forums. i just cant remember his signature right now. if you put up a post for buying the cd, he will answer along with others. he only charges 20 dollars shipped.
the cd on the grizzly is basically a manual, but alot more. it has 3 books in it, providing you with alot of info on the quad. it has video's about the quad, along with great pics of parts from the inside. it also has the complete manual in it, witch if you buy the manual, it alone is 50 dollars. i just look up what i need on the cd, and print it out for use. to me, this cd is the greatest thing for grizzly owners!!!
good luck!!!
jonathan, when you coming down to ride, lmao!!!!
